Test it monthly. That's what I should have done. I wonder if the motion detector ever worked. Also get the extra insurance on the system. Find out where the transformer is placed, and have screwdrivers handy in case you need to take things apart.
The only available service time for them was tomorrow, but I have meetings. The next time they could come to fix the system--which I am paying for but not getting--is eleven days from now. (I am home nearly all the time) I fumed about paying for a service I'm not getting and was connected to someone then connected to another person who said, that they'd make the determination about billing after it was fixed. Convenient for them. I pay the bill while not receiving the services. They offered to connect me to someone else, and I said "no." An hour on the phone was enough.

The moral of this story is that ADT needs more technicians. Eleven days before something gets fixed is not acceptable. Usually, their equipment is good. Their billing department also needs to work on the meaning of customer satisfaction.
