We phoned a number of service providers. We provided each of them the same measurements and got a price of $100 to $110 over the phone from the provider. He arrived promptly as agreed. But, after looking over the job, he raised the price to $150. We had moved a lot of furnishing to make the clean easier. And, we were also preparing for a dinner party. So, we were under time constraints and kind of "over a barrel" at this point. So, we agreed to the $150 because we didn't feel we could find anyone else in the short remaining timeframe. The contractor did an acceptable job. But, it was hard for us to overcome the negative feelings of a 30+% increase from phone to arrival. Frankly, had he told us $150 over the phone or had he told us that the $100 to $110 was just an estimate & he couldn't give us a firm price until he saw the job, we would have simply hired one of the other providers to do the job. But, the carpets are now cleaned. It's not the best job we ever had & not the worst either. But, I'd suggest being quite specific about price with this service provider if your talking over the phone. I'd suggest finding out if his price is only an estimate - subject to negotiation - or a firm price.
