"Thank you for your review! We greatly enjoyed working with you."
We paid 50% down for the job on August 12 and the work began on or around September 9. This was actually sooner than they had committed to, so we were pleased with that!
The owner and handyman came the first day to prep for the tile guy - the handyman was very kind and professional and worked quickly. The next day or so, the tile guy came to begin building the shower. All seemed to go well initially. However, when I mentioned to the tile guy where the grab-bar needed to go, he said he needed blocking put in - so the owner got on the phone with me and gave me a hard time for not reminding them the day before. The work order that the owner left for the workers to follow clearly stated that KB&B was to install customer-supplied grab bar. But apparently it was my job to tell the handyman what was on his to-do list - this theme continued thru-out the project - the owner did not serve as GC as I would have expected, but counted on me or my husband to do the checking and followup on pieces of the project.
Next, the tile was set and grouted in a few days. That's where the main trouble began. AFTER we paid the 40% tile set fee (now they had 90% of their money) we had a hard time getting anything accomplished in a timely manner.
We identified many issues with the tile job. First, and foremost, the shower floor was not to code, had a slope on it that was inconsistent, felt like a roller coaster, and sloped faster than code dictates - making it uncomfortable to stand on. In addition, since the slope wasn't smooth, water pocketed in places. Secondly, the custom border was lumpy - sticking out in several places. Many areas of detailed tile were not lined up, looking like someone just slapped it up. And the grout was not complete on the tile back splash - again this was our fault according to the owner since we installed the faucets (at the direction of their handyman). The owner told me I should only listen to him - not the handyman - perhaps if the owner were there for me to ask, I would have.
When I asked the owner to come by to go over the issues we'd found, he agreed - but it took several days until he could fit me into his schedule. When he walked in, he was shocked by the number of sticky notes I had on things that needed attention. As I showed him our concerns, and told him that we weren't asking for everything to be fixed, but just the main issues - the bad shower floor, the lumpy boarder - he said "you are a really picky customer" When I asked him if he wanted this custom job on display in his showroom, he didn't answer. I had to ask him to try draining water in the shower pan to see that it didn't drain properly and I also asked him to stand in the shower without shoes on. He then agreed "it's not right and needs to be redone."
Now, several days went by until they were able to come out to fix. The tile guy only ripped out part of the floor - not fixing it - actually making it worse - and attempted to repair the border. During this process, he chipped the tub surface, the floor was still against code, and the border still looked bad. At this point, we told the owner he needed to come back again - and we waited a week or so... When he came and met with my husband, the owner said "you are right, the border looks like sh**" but then in the next breath said "you are picky customers". After my husband quoted the plumbing code issue, the owner suggested he "rip out the job and give you your money back" My husband said no, we just want these few things fixed correctly.
In answer to why the tiles weren't level/even on the wall, the owner tried to make the excuse that the wall behind the shower wasn't straight - but it was his tile guy that put in the backer board. Next he tried to say the tiles were warped - but when you put a straight-edge on the tiles there were no gaps - no warping. After all this, the owner opened the calendar on his phone and committed to having the tile guy come out and fix it right on Wednesday.
Next week came - and that day was now taken by another customer who had been "waiting for their tile to come in for weeks" We argued, to no avail - and finally they came in later that week. Once the tile was done, we still didn't love it - but we were tired of arguing and just wanted to be done.
The glass company came in, installed the glass walls, and were wonderful. They were professional, courteous, helpful and responsive. I would definitely work with that glass business again.
The "one week" job was completed finally on November 3rd when we got a missing part from the glass company. We had a few things left on the punch list we had given the KB&B owner in early October - but we were tired of waiting, so we finished them ourselves (caulking and cleaning up the tile guy's grout mess on the marble counters).
We never heard from the owner again other than to get the final invoice. He didn't call to see if we were happy with the tile job, didn't check on the tub repair, didn't check on the glass install, didn't see the final product.
I guess our job wasn't "big enough" to warrant the service that other customers must have received from KB&B. As a matter of fact, the tile guy and the handyman mentioned to me on more than one occasion that this job is "peanuts" compared to the other invoices we see. I do hope that others have better experiences that we did with this business - perhaps previous customers didn't have custom tile work done - or perhaps the tile guy has changed over the years. I now know, however, that I will not provide 90% of the payment until I am much happier with progress on a job.
All lessons learned for me.

"Thank you for your review. You were a pleasure to work for and are such nice people!"
We had some problems with our own supplied faucets not fitting the sink and the shower faucet not turning off. This had nothing to do with them. They were very understanding and moved things around while waiting 3 days to get new faucets.
All workers, plumber, tiler, painter, handyman were all very professional and pleasant.
Workmanship was high quality.
Jack the contractor was great. Always checking to make sure things were ok and the quality was good.
"Thank you for your kind review! We greatly enjoyed working with you on your renovation."
"Thank you for your kind review! We have greatly enjoyed working with you through your kitchen renovation and we look forward to working with you again in the future!"
We had to wait for a direct shipment of the accessible version of the shower enclosure and the office kept us updated on the status. The existing single piece unit was cut out in pieces but the new three piece unit had a large back wall that was almost impossible to get maneuvered up the back step landing but they somehow managed it. The floor drain had to be moved and the plumber was available immediately when needed so the demolition/installation was completed in two days. Because of differences in wall enclosure height, some drywall patching had to be done. The finishing/repainting is so good it is impossible to tell where this was done.
For the kitchen countertop replacement, Jack patiently prepared several quotes for the cooktop wall (tile, granite splash, full granite wall). The kitchen counters were templated and then the granite delivered and installed several days later. Installation took a day. Jack had recommended we extend the bar overhang so there was more room to pull up stools so some additional supports had to be fabricated and trim replaced after the counters were installed. This was done the following day.
The staff were skilled, knowledgeable, professional, and cleaned up at the end of each day.
We will definitely have Kitchens, Baths & Beyond do any other renovations for us.
"Although we are in the same building with Budget Blinds, we are a separate company with no legal affiliation. Kitchens, Baths and Beyond is a remodeling company. You might want to remove this review and post it to Budget Blinds Angie's List account. Thank you!"
We love our new bathrooms!
He was really great about helping us select countertops, flooring and cabinets and never rushed us. (And he's a New Yorker so that was a plus!!)
are more than pleased with the final results and the quality of his work. Do not hesitate to give Jack your business.
