"Thank you for your kind review! We strive to provide excellent service to all of our clients."
What's worse, I found the error. Then after I pointed out the error, he still didn't see the over payment of tax. (The error was a double tax payment of an IRA rollover.)
Mark's comment after I asked about the error:
"No, you definitely paid tax only once." August 11, 2014
"...my software has been treating it (incorrectly) as a tax-free rollover..." August 11, 2014
After another email pointing out the error in even more detail, I finally got him to see the mistake.
Mark wrote: "Crap. You?re right. Good catch. I don?t know how that happened..."
He also wrote "I can?t believe I didn?t catch that. Too trusting of the computer I guess. It definitely seems to be a bug in our tax software..."
After the amended return was filed, it took 14 months to get my money back from the IRS. When I asked Accel for a refund, Mark replied:
"I?m sorry this was such a hassle for you, but it?s not reasonable to refund the tax prep fees."
Mark also wrote:
"At the end of the day, you are responsible for reviewing the return and ensuring its accuracy before filing."

I never received an apology or a refund from Accel for the error. Instead, I was reminded that I was responsible.
"I'm sorry for the mishap, but as I explained to you, this was an error that did not cost you anything (IRS even paid you interest on the refund). It's quite unreasonable to expect a double benefit of a refund of tax preparation fees when we prepared an amended return at no charge to correct the mistake--something that few other tax professionals would have done given that the error was not due to our tax advice or interpretation of the tax laws. At the end of the day, a taxpayer is responsible for reviewing his or her tax returns before filing and then notifying us of any reporting errors so that we can correct them before filing. Thankfully, such errors are extremely rare, but they can occur since only the taxpayer knows all of the facts of what transpired in a given transaction. When a reporting error occurs and comes to our attention, we go out of our way to speedily correct it, which we did in this case by preparing an amended tax return at no cost to you. Again, I apologize for the mistake and regret that you feel you are owed more than the service we provided. I'm thankful that IRS has agreed with our amended return and refunded you the overpayment with interest. I apologize for any inconvenience this caused you."
"Thank you for your positive review! We strive to please all of our clients, and we look forward to working with you again in the future."
Last week I gave him year to date income/expenses and projections of same for the balance of 2010 and asked him to prepare an estimation of what our tax liability might be. He responded the next day with a few questuions, and after clarifying other issues, he gave us an estimate of our state and federal tax liability for 2010...all within 10 days. Mark is accurate, thorough, and professional. I look forward to a continued and expanded relationship with him and Accel.
