Charles Steinert was the mortgage broker when we bought our house. He was pushy and gruff at the best of times, and downright rude and insulting at the worst. He insisted that he could not "lock in" a mortgage rate for us until we had a closing date, which he repeatedly changed himself. When we first spoke with him, he told us that we should be able to expect a rate around 6%, but showed us paperwork that he said was a "mock up" that gave the rate as 8.25%. We told him that there was no way we could afford that much, and he assured us that there was no way it would be that high. Guess what? He didn't "lock in" the rate until it WAS 8.25% - at which point we were magically able to get a closing date for the next day. At that point, we were so beaten down by the whole process (and homeless - we had given up our apartment three weeks before based on the original closing date) that we signed the papers. We struggled to make the payments until we could re-finance. The whole process was a nightmare.
