Ours was a bit of a challenging project, on a couple of levels. We own an historic home in Savannah and needed to have the stairs carpeted and the garden level carpeted. The stairs twisted and flared at the top of the cases. In fact, another carpet company had come before we went to Gilman, which we found here on Angie's List. They had measured and then their installer/estimator called to tell us they could not do the job because the stairs were going to be too difficult. We live in New York and only had limited time to be in Savannah and let the Gilman salesman (Bill) know that the timeframes would have to be tight and exacting. For the stairs, we wanted oriental patterned runners where possible. The owner, Doug, came out to measure the rooms and stairs himself. Bill called us as promised to let us know the approximate cost of the job and the timeline. We were kept apprised throughout the timeline as to the status and expected installation date as our trip to Savannah neared. The carpet arrived to the store as planned, and we were contacted to set up the installation. We arrived in Savannah as planned, a few days before Memorial Day and then stayed for the weekend, and Doug graciously set up our installation for Memorial Day since we would be leaving the day after. The installers did an absolutely amazing job. On the garden level, they disassembled two twin and a king size iron bed and moved the furniture, mattresses and bed frames from both rooms into the laundry room in order to clear the rooms for laying the carpet. The stairs were a true challenge ? they twisted at the top on two of the cases, and the landings widened, making them difficult to cover with the fixed-width runner and look right. Bill had anticipated this might be the case and had shown us full-roll carpet in the store that matched the interior pattern of the runner so that the installer would be able to cut the border of the carpet as needed and fill the center with the full-roll carpet. The installer was quite diligent and spent a good amount of time determining exactly how the carpet and border would need to be cut and tacked to achieve the correct look. He was very conscientious to demonstrate the two methods that could be used and ask which we preferred before he began the process of turning the curve in the case. He did a magnificent job.
We were also thrilled with the quality of the work in the garden level. And when they were finished, the installers put the all beds back into their respective rooms and put them back together. They cleaned up after themselves. We could not have been happier.
Gilman carries a wide variety of brands, styles and price points. We were very happy to find they had Karastan, a brand we've used before and enjoyed excellent wear with. Karastan is not an inexpensive carpet, so the job may seem expensive for what we had done, but it was worth the money, and Gilman's service was unbeatable, from the sale to the installation.
Savannah's best carpet store isn't in Savannah. It's in Bluffton, SC. It was completely worth the drive and the cost.

This was an exceptional experience from the moment we walked into their showroom. They have an incredible amount of flooring samples. The sales person was very helpful and knowledgeable. He helped us work through our options without any pressure. The owner came to the house to prepare the estimate and he too was very helpful and professional. One the day of the installation the crew arrived on time and worked diligently to get the job done. Moving the furniture was done carefully and without damage. The rugs we choose look great. We are very pleased with this purchase and the service we received.

Estimate was two day installation, it took one. Furniture was in place - installation included moving furniture and putting it back afterwards, including items on shelves, etc. Basically it was done so well I couldn't tell they had been in there, other than the flooring was installed. We are remote owners - this is a vacation rental villa and we would highly recommend them for situations such as ours. Very happy with the results, and can highly recommend them for both their showroom, knowledge, and professionalism.

The installers ran out of material so this portion of the job was completed on CHRISTMAS EVE with the crew leaving at 6 PM. This part of our holiday was essentially shot. The material for the other room came in a week later and, again, we had to go through 9 crates of wood to pick out the acceptable material and this portion of the job was completed at 6 PM on NEW YEAR'S EVE. Mr. Gilman came to our home on 1/2/14 to present us with the final invoice. I mention at this point that we had to pay a $4,900 deposit prior to the initial order of material. I suggest he contact his vendor, Stonewood Flooring, to see if they would make adjustments based on the aforementioned problems. Mr. Gilman thought that was a good suggestion and said he would get back with us after a response from the company. I emailed Mr. Gilman on JANUARY 17, 2014 asking for some feedback. He responded that he was as anxious to resolve this issue as we were. Evidently his sense of urgency is not the same as ours. He FINALLY asked to stop by our home of February 13, 2014, to present us with a final invoice and inform us that his vendor was not willing to make any adjustments or consessions. We discussed his willingness to adjust the final payment and, after waiting a week, we received an adjustment that somewhat eased the emotional stress that this project generated. The only positive of this project was the installation crew. The workmanship is excellent. They were sympathetic to our dilema and indicated this was not the first time they had these issues with Gilman Flooring. I learned a valuable lesson. I will NEVER post a deposit for a project again. I thought we were dealing with a legitimate company. They held us at ransom holding $4,900 of our money and forced us to make a coerced buying decision with very little alternative other than agree to proceed with the installation. We lived in a disruptive, torn up living environment from 12/16/13 until 12/31/13. This is an un-embelished account of this project documented by emails and documentation.

"First of all, please keep in mind the overall breath of positive comments posted on behalf of Gilman Floors. This particular customer is in no way representative of our excellent reputation. His comments are more of a rant for some reason to discredit our business. The facts in the beginning of his account are accurate. We did sign a initiate a contract and begin work on the said dates. Once the customer noticed that the wood floors had variation, I, Doug Gilman owner of Gilman Floors, was called to view the perceived problem. Hardwood is a natural product, and the lighter the shade, the more degree of variation can occur. Sometimes the samples do not show this variation. The customer asked me if it were my home, would I accept this variation. I told him that it looks natural and that I like would accept. At this point our accounts differ. I did not coerce this customer. I gave him the option of choosing another type of wood. He also could have cancelled his order then and received a full refund. He chose to sort through the boards and cull out “acceptable” boards. That amounted to about one third of the boards being rejected, for which we had to reorder more wood. That wood had to come from two different locations and travel across the U.S. during a busy holiday shipping time. We received the wood in time to finish the main room on Christmas Eve. The balance of the wood did not arrive until after Christmas, so we were not able to finish that separate room until after the Holidays. After the manufacturer rejected our claim (since the floor was approved by the customer), we were not given any concessions. I offered a fair amount of settlement to pacify the customer, but he rejected my initial offer. Even though this was a difficult situation, we were willing to settle to help this customer. But as you can read, some people can never be “made” happy. We took a difficult situation and made the best of it. Unfortunately, difficult and out of our control situations can happen when you are dealing with any home remodeling project. But in the end, what is important is the final product. Are you happy with your floor? This customer intimated that he loves his new floor. That is the definition of success. Did this installation take a little longer than expected? Yes. When a customer wants a real wood floor without real wood variation, problems will arise."

The service went very well. They were not the cheapest but they gave us a good service. The follow-up they called back and we heard back from them with any problems we have and they addressed it immediately. They're extremely helpful in the planning process. I haven't had any problems with them.

Installers were nice, however, in the quote, they did not advise us to install a water-resistant coating over the slab. Since our house, like most in Sun City Hilton Head, is ~2 feet above swamp, water seeped up within 6 months and discoloured the new flooring.
The real offense begins then. We had them come in, and verify the problem (Doug Gilman himself). They agreed, and said that they should have quoted vapor barrier. We had the affective flooring replaced, at our own expense (~2K). Doug pointed out that the original contract coved defects of manufacturing only.
Needless to say, more of the floor became discoloured. We now want to sell the house, and need to fix it. Gilman, as expected, quoted more than the original $$. Another contractor is about half.
Our realtor assured us that she could exert pressure, and get a discount. However, given Gilman's record, I am inclined to tell him to take a flying leap!

Owner arrived on time to do measurements for estimate. Work began the next week. Installers were on time both days and seemed very experienced. Very polite and courteous (even if some language issues. More comfortable speaking Spanish). Would recommend Gilman Floors to anyone who asked.
