I think this was a smaller job than he normally does. I appreciated his agreeing to do the work.

Our opinion: DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. On March 11th, we hired Mr. Chappell to clear one acre of the wooded lot, create a driveway, level an area for a concrete pad, and dig a water-directing swale at the rear of the lot. Mr. Chappell was told he could clear a path to a nearby gully on the property and use the debris as fill so there would be no charge for debris to be hauled away. We were told it could be done in a week so we put $1000 down to start the job and began scheduling septic, well, and concrete companies for 4-6 weeks out A month later the well people were ready to start and the excavation work was not done. Though the job started on March 24th, soon it appeared he was not on the job full-time and did not have the right heavy equipment for the job. Neighbors affirmed that his time on the job was erratic at best. At one point, we could tell no one had been working there for over a week. We kept contacting him and he kept assuring that it would be done - soon. When confronted on April 18th, Mr. Chappell had many excuses: He did not know there was a timeline (Plans were discussed with him more than once.); he did not know he had to clear an acre (He was so advised several times.) rainy weather was a factor (In a month there were plenty of nice days when work could have been done.); the septic required an extra 15ft to be cleared (The 15ft was a portion of the original one acre he was supposed to have cleared.); there was no direction on the installation of a culvert at the street (This slight glitch did not keep the work from continuing on the rest of the lot and digging the swale.); he had to dig a secondary driveway (Rough-clearing the second driveway did not add 3 weeks to the job.). Because the concrete and well companies were ready to move, Mr. Chappell was given a three-day deadline but he still dragged the work out. He finally indicated he was done (April 27th) but the job really was not done. Please note: he did not even clear half an acre (We rough-measured it to be 18,000 sq ft. which INCLUDED the square footage for the driveways and path to the gully). Pro-rated, it actually amounts to about 2/5 of an acre. He did not level the pad properly (we have pics) and he did not dig the swale. Now we must pay to have the rest of the one acre cleared, the pad properly leveled, and the swale dug. Mr. Chappell was very quick with one thing - getting us his bill and letting us know it needed to be paid in a week. Interestingly, the bill was not pro-rated and did not credit the $1000 already paid. Because of Mr. Chappells apparent lackadaisical work habits and propensity to put his own interpretation on things, we were not able to keep to our timeline and move our trailer onto the lot costing us another month rent on our apartment and delay on the other scheduled services. Mr. Chappells job performance has been totally inadequate in our opinion. We would definitely not recommend hiring him.

"These Folks had no intention of paying for the work after completion. We cleared to the exact specs that the 50 year old son gave and he approved. Job would get close to completion and the 50 year old son would add more work that his mother in Ohio knew nothing about. The son was not eager to move onto property and live in a camper. The mother was tired of paying his rent in Greenville. Easy to figure out. I hope that anyone else that plans to do work for these people - Run"

This business should be removed from your site. Mr. Chappell started a 2-day job 2.5 months ago and never finished. He made excuse after excuse. He had not taken any money from me. He could not work in the rain or it was too cold. He was on vacation. He was having surgery. He promised he would be on the site in less than 24 hours after surgery operating heavy equipment. I saw this has an unsafe practice and I fired him. He did not understand the laws of land clearing and stated several times he was going to burn tree debris instead of haul off even after he was told there was a no burn ordinance in the area. He did not bring appropriate equipment to do a routine clearing job and stated that equipment would cost too much money. He stated he did not know how to take a tree down from the top in a tight area to avoid it from landing on the house in the area. The only thing he did do is call me within 24 hours of my request on Home Advisor. He stated you required that he did that. He has now brought a lawyer in the picture and asking for money for work he never showed up to do. He should be removed from your site immediately.

"This review is disturbing to me as a professional contractor of 26 years. Mrs. Shirley H's [Consumer name withheld at their request] lot was 90% cleared/graded and rain delays were encountered during the month of January for most outdoor Contractors. The mobile home was moved in and set up on the lot. The day after setup she dismissed my company from the job while my equipment and operator was ready to complete the job. I have not received any payment for my company's services to date. I hope potential customers viewing her comments can read between the lines. Certainly not the way anyone expects to do business. Thanks. - TC"

Very professional. He was concerned about what we wanted from our land and tried to make it happen. He listened to our ideas and this made us feel confident in the job. Job done right!
