The salon itself has a very contemporary setup and looked very professional. I was greeted by the receptionist when I walked in and checked in for my appointment. I didn't ask about all the services they provide since I normally just get a cut. But from what I have seen, they offer cuts, color, highlights, and some kind of straightening treatment (I guess for people with really out of control hair). The salon seems really clean from what I can see when I go. I didn't have to wait at all when I checked in, so they seem to be really good at keeping on schedule and know how long each service will take.
I am reviewing Halton Hair because everyone there is very welcoming and all the stylists seem really nice, but I can only really comment on the stylist I use. She was the first one I picked when I started going here because I think she had the biggest smile when I walked in. Amanda has been cutting my hair for months. I wouldn't want to give a review based on a single visit, so I waited. But now I can honestly say I would follow this stylist if she ever left this salon, she is that good.
When I first started going to Amanda, I told her what I wanted to do with my hair and she made it look great. Since then, she has made a few suggestions on how my hair can accent my face and how she can cut and style it differently in order to emphasize the shape of my face etc. I look in the mirror each morning and I feel more confident because of how my hair looks. If you are looking for a new stylist or haven't been able to get your hair to do just want you want yet, I highly recommend Halton Hair and especially Amanda.
First, you can't rate a salon such as Halston if stylists just rent a booth and do not have consistent training from the salon. You can only rate an individual stylist. I called to ask if stylists have to demonstrate their cutting skills before renting a booth, and was told that they "usually" do. If not all of the stylists have to show their skills before renting a booth, it does not provide consistent quality among the stylists.
Before I went I called to ask to speak to a stylist about the continuing education that she received, and whether it was provided by the salon. She hemmed and hawed and could barely answer the question. This is the most unprofessional conversation I have ever had with a stylist.
The entryway and reception area are not professional. When you walk in, there is a wall in front of you, and you have to look for the reception desk, which is a ways away to your left. When I arrived two women were behind the desk and seemed to just be chatting with each other. It took them a while to notice me. I would describe the salon as having a family atmosphere rather than a professional one.
I asked for a haircut from a senior stylist, and had hair cut by the owner, Pam. She has a great depth of knowledge of hair products, including the individual ingredients. She gave an excellent consultation, and seemed to understand what I was looking for in a haircut. After the cut she dried and sprayed my hair without asking me first what I thought about it. She also didn't ask if she could spray it, which is important to me because often I feel nauseated by strong smells (allergies), and I don't like the look of my hair when it is sprayed.
*** She didn't "check" the cut either, and when I got home I saw that the two sides were quite uneven. This was a great disappointment since the rest of the cut experience was very good. But if you aren't happy with the cut, the rest isn't that important.
This experience definitely did not meet my high expectations after the rave reviews on Angie's List, especially since the owner, who is a senior stylist with many years experience, did my haircut. I don't know why this salon is listed as the top rated salon in Greenville. I would rate it as a little above average.
It would help a great deal if everyone reviewing a hair salon included the name of their stylist. In terms of the services received, a review of the salon has little meaning--you can only review what you have experienced, your individual stylist.
I will definitely be back in the future.
