From the beginning Greg made things easy. We spoke on the phone so he could get an idea of what all I wanted done the his Mom (family business!) came over to measure on a Friday. By Saturday night I had his estimate of $2,235.00 to refinish the floors (approx 730 sg ft) , apply stain, 3 coats of poly, shoemolding plus wood and labor to fix the floor grate area (approx 2ft x 3ft). Because my home was smaller and near another job they were doing he said he could fit me in the following Thursday! And I agreed.
In the days leading up to that we discussed on the phone then via e-mail a couple options to repair the floor - he even sent me pictures of the before/after fixes he'd done in other homes to help me choose. He also suggested I go with "natural" color (no stain) but I was pretty sure I wanted the warmer color of stain.
We met at the house that Thursday morning and he and his crew were on time. Greg explained that different woods take the stains differently so he'd have me pick from samples on my own floors. To do that he setup his equipment, being careful not to harm my walls or doors, then set to work sanding an area in my back room that had some staining from the past. While he was sanding his crew was busy removing old nails from carpet strips, pounding down loose boards etc.
He determined I had red oak and to help me decide what color he stained several areas of the newly sanded floor with different colors similar to what I'd described then another spot of just plain poly. In the end he was right and I chose the natural color with plain poly - Greg happily told me I'd just saved myself $200 and a day of work since there wouldn't be a staining charge! We decided I needed some transition pieces added for the entrances to bath and kitchen so my final bill was $1,999.00.
Then we discussed various ideas to fix the area where the floor grate had been...since my floors were built with gorgeous 1937 red oak the "new" red oak he had would never look the same. He explained that the old wood is from old growth trees that have grown to maturity over many years - the new is from smaller fast growing trees and the grain isn't the same. To demonstrate he poly coated a small piece of the new and it was very different so doing what they call "fingering" to feather the new into the old would look terrible. I decided to embrace the differences and asked that he create something of a "throw rug" effect in the 2ft x 3ft area which thankfully was centered in my hallway. We discussed various pattern ideas and Greg started laying out patterns. I quickly realized he was very creative so I told him to do what he thought best and surprise me - later that day I received an email showing me pictures of that area before and after he did the repair - and boy was I. With the pattern he created - Greg turned an eyesore into a focal point!!
They started the sanding. floor prep and 1st coat of poly Thursday, returned Friday for the 2nd coat and Monday for the 3rd coat. Greg met me Tuesday morning to check things out and receive payment. When we got there we realized there was an issue with my furnace being off which was slowing the floor drying and he assisted in getting that going.. Also noticed a fly had died and stuck to the floor - he tip toed over to remove it and offered to return after I moved in to repair that spot and any other marks from the movers.
All in all he did everything I wanted beautifully at a very fair price and stands by his work just like people told me he would. I highly recommend Greg and his company and will hire them again anytime I need floors refinished.
my husband and I shopped for someone to do this and one of the big issues was how long we had to be out of our home or at least stay off the floors until they dryed. Greg started the job on Tuesday, then came back in on Wed and Thurs for additional coats, so 3 coats in all. We were able to come back into our home on Friday a.m. His team is very professional and thorough. He did a fantastic job and I would recommend him without hesitation.
If you are looking for someone to stand by their word, their work and do a great job for a reasonable and fair price, he is your guy
Martin's staff left the house extremely clean, with no evidence that they were there. They were very friendly and answered any of our questions while they were doing the work. Our friends and neighbors who come over still are astounded as to how the floors look before and after, overall Martin's did an excellent job.
Greg asked me to initially send him some pictures so he could see the shape that the floors were in as I live in a rural area. When Greg responded to me, he responded with nothing but high quality professionalism and he indicated that he was going to be able to correct the previously done work and he would be able to get them into essentially new status.
Between my appointment time to have the work performed, I received a reasonable estimate, prompt service and responsiveness and integrity. We had discussed the color tones and what I was trying to achieve in my home as well as he made recommendation as to the shades and type of polyurethane protection on top of the floor to ensure that the nails of my dogs would not scratch through to the wood.
The first day that Greg worked at my residence, he not only completed the sanding, but removed the shoe molding and laid the stain down through out the three rooms of the wood floors. On the second and third day he applied coats of the polyurethane to help ensure to protective floors, but also did it in an efficient manner to ensure the floors were dried correctly between the coats. The work that Greg performed is absolutely amazing and I will post pictures of what my floors looked like before the work was performed and the outcome of Greg's work.
Another key point was the care that Greg and his crew offered when it came to protecting my personal affects from the sand, as well as covering the items that were within a blowing area and cleaning these items up afterwards.
