Did an excellent job on replacing roof (replaced 3 pressed board sheets, laid down snow/ice protectant covering, and all new architectural shingles} plus replaced 4-5 shingles on house. Carefully cleaned up afterwards. Couldn't ask for better service.

The estimator gave us a detailed list of what they would do if they installed a new roof. This included several things that the previous roofer did not tell us about such as several sections of our roof were at the minimum pitch for architectural shingles.....for these sections they would install additional waterproof membranes under the shingles as added protection. The installation crew showed up on time, worked steadily (while seeming to have fun!), left the yard tidy each day and at the end of the job, did not destroy shrubs as had the previous roofer, and the supervisor kept us informed of the progress and any other details he felt we needed to know. They finished in just about 2 1/2 days while working around rain showers on a couple of days and left a roof that not only looks good but is one that we feel we can trust. I am very pleased with the complete start to finish job done by the Clyde Nettles crew and would recommend them. While the price may have been slightly more than some others, I noticed several items they did that such as better vent pipe covers, copper pans in some valleys where we had leak problems before, and additional waterproof membranes that others did not propose. After the previous roof, it gave us some peace of mind.

We had several roofers evaluate our hail damaged (25.33 sq) roof.  Decided on Clyde Nettles based on responsiveness to initial contact, professionalism and knowledge of their estimator as well as their price.  I contacted their sales representative Bill Excell, and told him that, although their quote came out higher than our insurance company would allow, I would go with their firm with some modifications to their quote. I asked for a dimensional shingle that cost about $9/sq more. I also told him that due to all of the rot visible where shingles met wood, I wanted wood replaced and aluminum drip edge added.  He told me that they always replace wood when rot is encountered and that was no problem.  I told him I would go as much as another $663 to do this additional work.  He said he would look at the numbers and get back to me.  That discussion was followed by a revised quote for $663 more with changes detailing new shingle and aluminum drip edge.  An attachment covered additional terms including rot.
Work began in an extremely timely manner, much sooner than I anticipated. After the old roof was stripped, workers began installing the drip edge over the wood rot. I tried to talk to the only installer on the ground but he just looked and shrugged when I asked who was in charge at the job site.  I quickly realized he was far from fluent in English.  I called the office to voice my concerns and they immediately responded by sending out the sales rep.  When I showed the problem to the rep, he replied that the rot was on a part of the building that is considered trim.  He pointed out that the contract attachment only discussed rot involved in sheathing and framing.  Semantics. The term frame to me means outer edge, re: picture frame.
I told rep that the reason I went up over the initial quote was to get the (ground) visible rot repaired and that discussions about adding drip edge were always in conjunction with rot. He apologized and said sorry, but I needed to hirer a carpenter to do what I wanted done. I then asked if all they had intended to do between quote 1 and quote 2 was to upgrade the shingles by $225 and add in $80 dollars in drip edge, I should be due some recompense.  He said he would discuss that with Suzette Porth, the company President.
I now know that the rotten part is called shingle mold. An 8 ft piece in rot free PVC cost about $10.50. Probably 6 pieces would have solved my problem.
Response from Clyde Nettles Roofing & Painting
"We did the initial roof measurement on 6/12/14, at which time no one was home.We emailed the estimate to replace the roof with 25 year shingles the homeowner on 6/13/14, we also included 240 lf of drip edge to comply with SC building codes. The homeowner contacted us and wanted a price to replace the roof using architectural shingles and to see if we could do the job for $6750. We advised the homeowner that we would have to re-work our budget to see if that would work. The homeowner asked about wood replacement if deteriorated wood was found and we informed him we would if that was the situation-we were speaking of roof decking, not trim work. At the initial visit, there were gutters on the house and any deteriorated trim was not visible. The gutters had been removed when we arrived to replace the roof. Also, we explained to the homeowner that the cost difference between the 3 tab shingles and architectural shingles was approximately $25 per square. This conversation took place after we started the roof. Our contract for the architectural shingles also states using ProStart starter strip, Seal-A-Ridge hip & ridge, along with the Timberline Architectural shingles. We did explain that the combination of these items is what dictates the cost of upgrading to the architectural roofing system. We did apologize to the homeowner with regards to the misunderstanding between the roof decking replacement and the wood trim. We did explain that we do not provide services for trim work, as our main focus was roofing. We did replace two pieces of plywood roof decking during the roof replacement. The homeowner was not charged for this work."

This happened several times and the leak continued.  However, there was always a prompt response and no additional charge. Finally the company sent another employee who speculated that the leak might be coming through the mortar on the chimney and that sealing the mortar might help.  No promises and there would be an additional cost. They sealed the chimney and the leak stopped. The company's persistence at finding the problem was key.

When I called the Clyde Nettles company a representative paid us a visit very promptly.  He arrived exactly on time and even came late in the afternoon to accommodate my husband's work schedule.  He first looked over our roof and took measurements, then made a very thorough presentation of what their company could offer, taking all the time we needed to answer our questions.  There was absolutely no high pressure sales talk, which we greatly appreciated.  He emailed us with a price quote the very next morning.  I took several weeks to get quotes from 2 other roofers.  One offered the same brand of shingles but in a color that Clyde Nettles had not included in their brochure, a color that we really liked for our home.  Even though we could have signed on with that company as the prices were very close, we felt a lot more confident with the Clyde Nettles company.  When I called their rep back with our dilemma about shingle color, he offered to obtain the color we wanted, and at no extra charge for this.  We decided to proceed and were told there would be approximately a 3-week waiting list.
Right about the 3-week mark, we got a call that they would be out the following morning to do our roof.  They arrived promptly when they said they would and went right to work.  Our rep was there off and on throughout the day and assured us that there was a very competent crew leader there who he had a lot of confidence in during the times when he had to leave.  But judging by what I saw I really don't think they needed any supervision.  Everyone there was extremely hard-working and seemed to know exactly what needed to be done and just did it.  They were also very polite.  I even heard them singing at times, but if I happened to go outside all became silent (except for the hammering!) I guess out of respect for my presence.  They took great pains to clean up all debris, I hardly found any bits of shingles or nails left in our yard.  They finished the job by late afternoon, then the rep came back the next day just to look the job over himself and make sure that we were completely satisfied.
I would not hesitate to hire Clyde Nettles Roofing again, or to recommend them to anyone.

They did a good job. I went with them based on their reputation. So, I may have paid a little more to go with them, but I was very happy with the outcome.

My roof was leaking and they solved the problem by putting a rubber mat down. The job went very well. They were well-known at the time and they were very professional and courteous. They identified the problem quickly and made a recommendation about how to fix it. The rubber mat has been there since then and I've never had another roof leak.

Bill came out and quoted the job. Bill was very honest and up front with me. Explained to me that they couldn't guaratine the garage because of it being to flat, but the rest was. Bill had the crew here first thing in the morning and started the work. Crew was hard working and professional. Bill did have the crew rip up the front of the roof and redo it to make sure it was correct. Highly impressed with Bill and Clyde Nettles roofing job.
