Storage
When I entered the store inquiring about renting a floor sander I was steered away from the drum sander by the salesperson. He thought that I would be able to get the job done using the standing orbital sander. I brought it home against my instincts and learned after one pass on the floor that it was not taking up hardly any of the old finish. I promptly returned it to the store to exchange it for the drum sander. Even though the salesperson had steered me away from the drum sander which I would have gotten initially, I had to pay for three hours with the other sander that he convinced me to rent. Feeling it was a little unfriendly, I brushed it off and got back to sanding.
Of course I completely forgot that I should have picked up an edge sander too at that point, but no salesperson even recommended it--which would have saved me another trip and been a good up sale on the part of the salesperson. The third day of my rental I had completed my passes with the course sandpaper and moved on to the medium grit sandpaper. At this point, the sander began malfunctioning. I don't know if the sawdust generated by the new grit was just clumpier or stickier or if the machine was clogged some other way, but I spent the whole afternoon trying to unclog the machine, and the machine ripped up all of the medium grit sandpaper before I finished even one room with the medium grit. Of course, I didn't start until the afternoon after work, and so there was no way for me to take it to the shop for troubleshooting or repairs or to get more sandpaper. I took it back the next day to complain about the machine's performance, and the man told me that the sandpaper probably ripped because I didn't tighten the bolts tight enough (the only reason that would be the case is because one of the bolts was practically stripped and was difficult to tighten--and therefore due to faulty machinery) and that the machine was probably clogged by a piece of the ripped sandpaper--which I wouldn't be able to fix without dismantling the machine, since I did everything but that, including both vacuuming from all sides of the machine and using the blower setting to dislodge clumps on multiple occasions.
Although frustrated with having a day of work wasted, I expected a modicum of decent customer service. But no. I was told that they couldn't refund that day of the rental to me because the machine was with me and therefore wasn't available to be rented out to anyone else. I told them they shouldn't rent it out to anyone else because it was malfunctioning. On top of that, they had other drum sanders not rented out, so clearly they didn't miss out on the rental opportunity. Simply offering me a free extra day of renting the sander and looking at the machine with me to figure out the problem would have made me a loyal customer. Instead, they get this bad review and have lost my future business.
