"We have checked our records, and we do not have you in our system for completing any move with our company. I can assure you that we would not barter any move estimate or price as we must comply to our Tariff. Can you please call our office so that we can assist you in properly reporting this to the SC Public Service Commission. Our telephone number is 843-529-0220. Thank you!"
It was terrible, start to finish, and continues to be so.
First, I should say that I have used Two Men & a Truck four times previous to this move, and always had good experiences. The last move before this one was in January 2009 (before the current manager, Keith West), and went exceedingly well. I had numerous issues with the most recent experience, and have sent 3 emails to Keith with no response whatsoever. I called him yesterday, June 9, and left him a detailed message asking for the courtesy of a reply. In the message, I told him that I am not looking for any kind of refund, just a conversation - still no call back, no email reply. I also told him in the voice mail message that he struck me as a "stand-up kind of guy," and that I was very surprised that he would not even respond to me.
On April 30th, two weeks before the scheduled move, Keith came to my home, did a walk-through and gave me an estimate of $1,163 to move me to another house 15 minutes down the road. On moving day, the 3 men did show up on time. They worked very slowly, almost meandering from the house to the truck with boxes. Three or four hours later, I realized that they were not going to be able to get everything into the truck, and said so three different times. Jamal continued literally cramming things on top of things in the truck, arguing that he could get it all in. I finally called the office, spoke with Renee and told her they had been trying for a while to get everything in the truck, and couldn't do it. She put Keith on the phone, who came to the house with a pick-up truck and another man to pick up the things Jamal couldn't get in the big truck. Keep in mind that they were charging me $120 an hour to struggle with this, with an unsuccessful result.
I moved into a 1400 square foot home, comfortably, without clutter, so I did not have a lot of stuff to move. It took 3 men from 9:30am to 6:30pm (plus an hour travel time) to get it done.
The movers broke a wooden quilt rack in 5 places, and I was told that they "have a guy" who does repairs. They took the rack, and said they would get it back to me in a week or two. Bryan is the man in charge of repairing damaged goods. This wooden quilt rack only weighs about 5 pounds. Why does that matter? Because if Two Men & a Truck cannot repair it, they only have to pay me $.60 a pound, or $3.00.
With the foregoing as a preface, here is the email I sent to Keith on June 3, copied and pasted below:
"Good morning, Keith. Can you give me a status on the repair of my quilt rack? Bryan called a few days after the move, and said that there was a slight delay, but it's been almost 3 weeks now. Please give me an update. Also, I never followed up with specifics on the move that Jamal, Markus and Morgan did for me on the 15th. Shame on me for not reading the contract, which clearly indicates Two Men have no responsibility for the contents of any boxes they didn't pack. I had a lot of things broken that were heavily wrapped in large bubble wrap, packed in boxes with pillows and such on the bottom. You would have to have thrown them down pretty hard to break them. I think a lot of things may have been broken when Jamal was trying to cram things into the truck that wouldn't fit. He also spent a lot of time (at $120 an hour) trying to force things in before I called you.
When I told them how to place things in the new house, Jamal asked me to tape my diagrams to each bedroom instead. I did, and then they had to re-arrange pieces, due to the fact that they did not know the difference between a dresser and chest of drawers. The mirror on my dresser was attached by one screw in the middle instead of all 3 (both sides), and it almost broke and fell on me when I moved the dresser closer to the wall the next day. The slats under the box springs of my bed were all placed at the top half, and were placed at angles. I figured this out when I sat on the foot of the bed, and everything collapsed. I am not a youngster, and it was exhausting for me to get everything like it needed to be.
I had boxes clearly marked as Garage, Storage Room, MBR, Side BR, Front BR, Kitchen, etc. Only things marked Kitchen made it to the right room for the most part. There were many, many boxes that were dumped in the garage, even though clearly marked for other areas. I am not exaggerating when I tell that you I spent the better part of two days just moving boxes to the correct area.
I have a trunk that weighs about 50 or 60 pounds, and they stacked it on top of box of linens, which was on top of the chest of drawers. I am 64 years old - imagine the challenge of getting it down by myself.
The rubber tip is missing from one end of a new shower rod, and one leg of my ironing board. How does that even happen? Doesn't sound like a big deal, but just try to replace them.
This was my 5th experience with Two Men and a Truck, and the only one that was awful. The last team that moved me in January 2009 - Will, Jeremy and Scott - did an outstanding job, and worked HARD to get me moved as quickly as possible. Nothing was broken - literally nothing - and my total cost was $960. I gave each of the guys a $50 check, and was happy to do it.
I feel totally disrespected by Jamal and his team. They were slow, unmotivated, took much longer than it should have, broke many well-packed things, and completely disregarded where boxes needed to go.
I know this is long, but I do feel that you have a vested interest in the quality of your movers, and probably appreciate knowing how your teams perform. I would encourage you to ask for feedback from other customers, and not just go by my experience.
As an Angie's List patron, I do plan to review Two Men & a Truck after all the dust settles, and once I have my quilt rack back. I'd welcome your feedback, because I do want to be fair."
My advice to anyone considering this company for a move ... READ THE FINE PRINT. They are responsible for practically nothing. And do not expect return phone calls after they have your money.
UPDATE: My quilt rack was returned to me this week, almost six weeks after the move. I was surprised and pleased to see that it was actually restored very nicely. Got to give credit where credit is due ... I never did receive a call back or an email from Keith West, even after sharing my experience with the home office of Two Men & A Truck.
I was disappointed about the lamp, but overall the gentlemen I spoke with were very professional. I will definitely read the small print next go around.
Once they got to the new house they took care to put every piece of furniture where I wanted it and a couple of times had to remove what they just placed for me to move to another location in the house (as we were down sizing homes).
This company was so good that I had them move my daughter just a couple of weeks later. They had to pick some furniture from 1 location and some from a 2nd location and still take it to the new place. They did all of that in under 3 hours.
I have had positive experiences with them and have used them on several moves now.
The entire process went without a hitch. Chris came out and gave us an reasonable estimate on the 'spot'. Renee was very helpful with scheduling and communication, even when we had to delay the move 1 day due to our closing delay.
Dee and Jesse packed the house - they were very hardworking, professional and did not stop! On moving day, Dee, Leroy, Sheldon and Stevens sweated for over 10 hours:-) They didn't stop either! Everyone worked really hard, was courteous, and professional. No one complained, they just wanted to get the job done!
Thanks all. You made our moving experience so much better, and a lot less stressful. I will definitely recommend you. Thanks for taking such good care of our things.
Well done!
