Julia F Martin Architect LLC
About us
Julia F. Martin, AIA, LEED AP has practicing architecture since graduating from Virginia Tech with a Master of Architecture degree in 1998. Previously she had engaged in such varying endeavors as an early year abroad (Rotary International Exchange Student to Recife, Brazil), public service (VISTA/Americorps volunteer in rural North Carolina), international higher education (Associate Professor of English at the Autonomous University of Barcelona), and an indepth study of European culture, history, and languages (B.A. Furman University, including foreign studies in Spain, Belgium, and the British Isles). Now married to a Venetian, the richness of global encounters continues to inform her approach to design here in Charleston. She enjoys collaborating with the city's numerous departments, boards, and organizations during the design process, and she finds meaningful solutions to the complex design issues that inevitably arise in this historic urban environment that so merits our deep respect. Julia F. Martin Architect LLC provides a range of services including all facets of residential and commercial construction - from a small residential kitchen addition to a major commercial adaptation of a 10,000 square foot medical office. Although the majority of projects are in downtown Charleston, the firm has experience in neighborhoods and municipalities throughout the Lowcountry - Mount Pleasant, Summerville, James Island, North Charleston, and Beaufort, among others. We take pride in our abilities to navigate through the sometimes-intimidating processes involved in designing and building in the Lowcountry. We work most often with the City of Charleston and its various review boards and preservation organizations, and we sincerely respect these authorities and have enjoyed working with them for many years now. We are able to provide and/or facilitate Earthcraft or LEED certification, and in collaboration with various local colleagues, we can provide or facilitate related services such as Structural Engineering, Landscape Architecture, MEP Engineering, and Site-Related Engineering. Moreover, we have developed strong relationships with a number of builders, both residential and commercial, and we are happy to make recommendations based on our knowledge of these professionals.

Julia was understanding of our situation and we ended the contract early without additional payment for canceled services. She also provided the CAD files so we could have any other service provider pick up where she left off.
I would recommend Julia for larger projects when you have a good understanding of the layout you want.
Julia also has a great reputation with the review board downtown and understands what is acceptable given a focus on historic preservation.
"i wish the customer all the best as they renovate their house - they seem like very nice people. my only response to this review would be to point out that a) theirs is the only contract that i have never ended early in all my years of practice (and i'm thankful it was mutually agreeable to do so in this case), b) i have successfully completed dozens of similar small-scale historic renovation jobs, and c) i actually really enjoy space planning, no matter the size or scope of a project. i really hope they found someone who 'clicked' better with them and was able to help them settle on a design for their kitchen & master bath - again, i wish them all the best & i think their house is very cool!"
