Jon came out to my house on time, looked up at the 2nd story at the damage he could see and gave me an estimate of $975.  I accepted his estimate and a couple of weeks later, he came back and repaired the roof damage.  He sent me an invoice for $350!!!  I emailed him back and asked about it.  He told me that when he actually got up on the roof, he realized that the damage was not as extensive as he first thought.  The main problem had been that the gutters were pulling away from the house because of the buildup of the granules that had fallen off of the shingles.  so he took the time to clean out all of my gutters, and blew off the roof and then reattached the gutters and fascia board, and also recaulked five boots.  Needless to say, I was very happy.  It was so honest of him, he could have easily charged me the $950 and I would not have been the wiser.  Thanks so much Jon, you certainly have my gratitude and business from now on!

During winter of 2011, we contracted with local painter recommended by Glidden Paint Co as "best in town" to clean and coat the almost 8,000 square feet of standing seam terne rooting that was "molded" to this great old home (built in 1890).  The Glidden "rep" said they would choose their best product for the job.   Two weeks post completion, the product was peeling, cracking, and blowing off in windy conditions.  Glidden said it was the painter's fault.. poor prep.  But experts said the product chosen would not have adhered to this metal regardless of preparation.  We watched as the coating trapped water underneath and progressively flaked and lifted. It was a disaster and roofers and painters consulted in the months and years since then all said "replace the roof." Quite a few other historic homes in town have replaced roofing with new metal and we felt it gave the homes almost a "warehouse" look.  These old homes are supposed to have terne roofing!  After a lot of research, we knew we wanted to clean the existing roof and coat it with Acrymax. There are two elastomeric coatings made in Charleston, but our experience with one of them in 1999 was not successful.  It washed off in two years, leaving a camouflage look and stopping up our gutter system.  The closest certified contractor Acrymax had was in western VA, which would have involved major hotel, etc. expenses.  Local contractors had no idea what needed to be done to save the grand old roof. 
We called DLV Roofing after noting online that it was a 3rd generation company... like Preservation Products.  Ryan of DLV came out within 2 days bringing with him Bret McKenzie of Blackwater Construction. They knew exactly what needed to be done to adequately clean the roof and coat it to preserve it for future years.  They agreed to become certified for Acrymax application so that we would be covered by Acrymax's warranty, and be able to pass that assurance on to any future owners. 
The entire roof was cleaned using an environmentally conservative blasting machine that utilizes small glass beads and a limited spray of water.  The result was incredible.  With the exception of some valleys where trapped moisture had created some pin holes, the metal looked like new.  They replaced some metal runs in those areas and utilized Acrymax methods to adequately seal others. The team worked for six HARD weeks in incredible heat and we can't say enough about the result.  The roof is a beautiful slate gray color and with all our hurricane season rains lately... we know we're completely dry and protected for years to come.   These fellows did a fantastic job and I'd trust any roofing job to their capable hands and amazing work ethic.  They were absolutely determined that this job be as good as it could be. In our world, we felt that we simply had to preserve the amazing craftsmanship and terne metal that went into the original construction.  To tear off a roof that was "made" for this house would have been a crime. We are so very, very grateful to have found these young men who agreed with those values. It is gratifying to know that in this "instant, microwave" world, there are still folks around who fall into the "craftsman" category.  If we build a "retirement home" we'll certainly want to be associated with these folks again.

DLV was the only roofer to return my phone call for an estimate.  Two days before the work was to be completed, I was contacted to confirm the appointment.  On the day of the appointment, I was contacted again.  This time to check to see if it was raining in our area.  The crew arrived and promptly set about completing the roofing repair tasks.  All removed material was taken away.  There was nothing left behind for me to haul away.  While there are new shingles on the roof in several locations, it is difficult to locate where the repairs were completed, unless you know where to look.  The work took approximately 3 hours to be completed which included a 20 minute rain delay.  The crew was very courteous and friendly.  We will use DLV to do roof inspections about every 3 years. Additionally, in about 5 or 6 years, we will use DLV to put a new roof on our home.
