"Shortening sleeves on suit jackets takes 1.5 hours of labor when done correctly, tapering sides takes about an hour done correctly. Hemming pants takes about 15 minutes. These times do not include fitting time. Altering five suits jacket and pants can take seven hours or so depending what they need. $235 for seven hours of labor comes to a little over $30/hour, at which rate no business can survive. Think about the labor you are charged per hour for services, most charge $60 to $100 per hour. As for having to meet at 6 am, I work at our Mount Pleasant location, but I was willing to drive to North Charleston to do the fitting there so I can drive back before traffic gets impossible to navigate, in order to complete tailoring jobs. Again, when you charge little over $30/hour for labor, you cannot afford to sit in traffic instead of completing work. Alterations work is greatly under appreciated by those who are unwilling to take a moment and think that the person performing the work has to make a living, they have a retail location lease with other expenses, a mortgage and a family to feed. Alterations professionals have dedicated their life to providing excellent quality services the same way as others dedicate their life to their chosen profession, they deserve to be compensated fairly for the labor they put into each job. Thinking that alterations should be cheap just because "it's just sewing" is like thinking good food in good restaurants should be cheap just because "it's just cooking".
