A co-worker of my husband's knew we were obtaining quotes from vendors to get new A/C units installed after ours died. We had been getting other recommendations and were having no luck finding someone we liked, with reasonable prices. On a whim, we called AirTek after the co-worker raved about them.My husband met them at the house, and they made several recommendations that the other vendors had no made. Not only that, but their apples-to-apples quote for the equipment was much lower than three other vendors we had spoken with. In the end, we went with AirTek based on the co-worker's recommendation, my husband's rapport with the techs that came to the house, as well as the final price we were able to negotiate with them. I called them on a Tuesday to confirm we wanted them to do the work, and by Thursday afternoon they were at our house taking care of business - just in time to beat a lengthy heat spell which started on that Friday!The new units are great, and it's nice to be in a cool house again (it took us a month after the original units died before we found AirTek and chose them for the job)!! In the summer of 2011 I called Airtek and had them come out and diagnose my A/C unit and perform their so-called and quot;spring tune-upand quot;. I asked them also explain to me why the house would never cool down below 75 - 76 degrees when the outside temperature was above 90 degrees. When all was said and done, I was told there was nothing wrong with my A/C unit other than it was just a little low on freon, which the technician stated he and quot;toppedand quot; off and it was now full. I also asked the technician to investigate why there was no air flowing from the vent in the guest bathroom, and that was never looked at, and to this day, there is still no air flowing from the vent in our guest bathroom.
Airtek's recommendation was that I have an attic fan installed to draw the hot air out of my attic during the summer months. I asked the techncian why this wasn't installed when the house was being constructed, especially considering the heat and humidity in SC. He stated, you'll have to ask the builder about that, we only performed the work that was stated in the scope of our contract with Infinity Designs.
None of my other neighbors have attic fans and have the same ridge vents installed on their roof lines as I do. Both neighbors on either side of me stated they have never had a problem with keeping the temperaure in their homes at a constant setting during the summer time, and they don't have attice fans.
My next door neighbor, who recently moved, is a mechanical engineer and was the plant manager for a firm located in Charlotte, so I asked him if he knew of anyone who might be able to tell me the problems I was having with my A/C unit. He stated he knew a guy who had done work for him at his plant on several occasions and was now retired, but the gentleman did stop by to look at unit for no charge. He stated the A/C unit was never fully charged prior to our occupying the home. He added almost 3 pounds of freon to the A/C unit and that seemed to solve the problem, for now! We'll have to see how this summer goes as to whether or not the unit can keep up with the heat.
