Gave a reasonable estimate lower than the other bidder.
Installed it when he said he would, and showed us informative details that will help in its maintenance.
He was considerate and trustworthy.
"Thank you for your kind words. We work very hard to take exceptional care of our customers homes, both in the technical expertise that we have and in the cleanliness of our completed work. We want your area that we have worked in cleaner than when we arrive!"
I first asked them not to hammer it loose, since my water pipes are in the slab, but the young fellow went ahead and hammered very hard until Istopped him. Next thing I knew, I smelled smoke, and he was out there with a torch trying to loosen it, but he'd set my vinyl siding on fire. When I ran, he got in his truck and sped off. I have receipts and photos for their damages but couldn't prove anything.
Next day, my cold water pipes burst and it turned out to be cheaper to reroute them through the attic than dig up the slab. I had to pay another plumber almost $3000 for that job.
Southern never apologized or took any reposnsiblity. Previously, every little job I called them out here for seemed to have an estimate of $800, like that's the only amount they knew.
By "licensed," I think that means one plumber is licensed and the other workers seem to be unsupervised, untrained high school kids.
"Ms. [removed member name], Thank you for the review on Angie's List. Could you please contact me at our office number, 803-649-3516? The staff can give you my cell number if I am out of the office. I do have a phone listing and address in our records but the number I have in my records has been disconnected. There is no invoice for this date in our records, only a quotation from August 4, 2003. It does not deal with the problem stated here. Data can be lost or corrupted, so we may not have all of your information to pull from. Our records from our dispatch software do not indicate that we were at your address on July 1, 2012. Can you help us reach you so that we can address this issue? Best Regards, Harry Nix President Southern Plumbing & Electrical, Inc"
hot water, I reluctantly agreed. Chris replaced the two copper tubes atop my water heater with PEX materials plus a ball valve in under an hour. I was surprised to see how simple and quick it was and continue to wonder why it was so obscenely expensive. The materials could not have cost more than $30, so he essentially was charging over $350 dollars per hour for labor.
I felt ripped off, so I asked for reconsideration of the charges through Southern's "Contact Us" feature on their web site but received no reply.
"We appreciate the business, and the review. In response, allow us to note a couple of items: 1. The $69.00 trip charge was refunded, (check number 1657), because this was an Angie’s list referral. Our technician did not realize that the dispatch fee was waived at the time of the service call. On a return phone call to the customer (on September 10th, 2014) in regard to the pricing on this invoice, I informed them of this error, and let them know that a check would be coming in the mail for the $69.00. 2. The customer is correct that I did not respond to a “contact us” question on our website. Because I spoke with them on the phone in regard to this matter, I felt that the matter was resolved. We spoke about the cost of the repair, whether we had quoted the work before beginning, and whether or not the leak issue was resolved. The leak was resolved, the work was quoted up front, and the trip charge in question refunded. It was Southern Plumbing, Electrical, Heating and Air that found the discrepancy with the trip charge and promised to refund the money. 3. Often, when a repair is quickly done, there is an assumption that it only takes “x” hours and “y” dollars in material in order to make that repair. In fact, much more has gone into the effort. The truck that is stocked with the proper material not only costs money in fuel, taxes, tires, insurance and maintenance, but the stocking of material also costs time and money. The workman’s comp and liability insurance that protect our workers and our customers also costs money, not to mention the health insurance required to attract and keep qualified technicians. The price is up-front, meaning that if the technician has problems for any reason with the quoted repair, the cost to the customer does not change. For instance, if he had to stay on site because of defective material or pipe (this does happen occasionally), we do not charge extra for it. We stand behind our quote. Finally, to have a highly-trained technician (this also comes with a healthy investment on the part of the company) quickly and efficiently make a correct repair on a customer’s water heater piping connections- a repair that was diagnosed and quoted up-front before the repair was made- is in itself a tremendous value. Many has been the time when all of us have spent our precious time sitting in a doctor’s waiting room, wishing that we were not a captive audience. Our lives are all busy, and what value can we place on time saving? Once again, we appreciate the opportunity to help a customer with their hot water issue, and the added benefit of responding to questions regarding why the price is what it is. Many of us never consider the upfront investment that a business makes in order to efficiently, correctly respond to a problem with our heating, air conditioning, plumbing or electrical systems. This is why we at Southern quote our pricing up-front, before the job is completed.
