The first time I needed a plumber, calls to a few companies in the yellow pages showed Pipe Works' fee for a service call to be lower than most. Pete Widener, the owner, answered the phone and said he wouldn't charge extra even though it was after hours--which I really appreciated.
When I hadn't received an invoice after about a month, I called the office and offered to pay without one, but the office manager said Pete hadn't yet given her an amount to charge. I called a couple more times and got the same answer; then decided that if they weren't too concerned about getting their money, I shouldn't worry either. When the bill finally arrived a few months later, there was a typed apology for and quot;any inconvenience the delay may have causedand quot;. I paid it immediately and all was fine.
Invoices for subsequent service calls were also long in coming, though never quite as delayed as that first one.
But the last time Pipe Works worked for me was different. I didn't get an invoice right away, which by now was well established as the norm so I thought nothing of it. But a couple of months after the service, my phone rang about 9:30pm on a Saturday evening. It was Pete saying my account was in arrears and they needed payment. I told him I had never received a bill; he said he didn't know anything about that, only that mine was and quot;in a bunchand quot; the secretary had given him as being more than 30 days overdue. I told him to send me a bill and I would pay immediately--which I did, with a curt note, the same day it arrived a few days later.
[The date shown--1/2/2012--is not correct, by the way, but Angie's List requires an exact date and that old calendar is long gone.]
If Pipe Works had more professional billing practices, I could recommend them. But it is really offensive being essentially called a deadbeat when you're a long-standing customer and have always paid invoices immediately upon receiving them.
