- I ordered five Activeyards Dogwood 8ft. vinyl fence sections, eight 5x5 posts, and a gate to replace an existing wooden fence. - The fence had one transition section from 6 ft. to 4 ft. - On the morning of my installation, I called Statewide Fence Builders and spoke with Joyce (owner) to confirm that I did not need the Activeyards transition brackets for the transition section. She said “no,” and then I asked “what is the on-center measurement of the 5x5 posts,” and she replied “96 inches on center." - I installed ALL the posts and bottom rails in concrete at 96” as told by Joyce (owner). - The next morning I installed the first two 4 ft. sections successfully. - Next, while installing the transition section, I realized I was one tongue/groove panel short. There were only 14 tapered panels in the bundle, instead of 15 panels like the two previous 8 ft. sections, and the top rail was too short to fit in the routed post holes. It then clicked... that specific transition section needed to be set at 90” on center to accommodate the one less panel and angled top rail shorter distance span due to angle. - So, I called my salesperson Raphael, who basically said I should have “figured it out.” I then contacted the owner Joyce, and said, “move your last 2 posts.” Unfortunately, the posts were concreted into the ground and would have required a ton of additional labor to remove the three sections and start all over. - Raphael, the salesman, never mentioned during the order process that the transition section was unlike normal sections, the packing list and materials didn’t have any warning of 90” for the transition section. Most importantly THE OWNER told me 96” for ALL posts minutes before starting the fence project. - I asked for a minimal refund of $187, the price of the transition section, for the incorrect information given to me, and the reengineering I had to do to the top rail to make it work. - Joyce (owner) NEVER replied to me email. - Overall, absolutely the worst customer service. Learn from my lesson, don’t waste your hard-earned money at Statewide Fence Builders, Inc.
Response from Statewide Fence Builders Inc
"DIY is just that, do-it-yourself. The customer is responsible for measurements, installation, hiring his own contractor to install etc. Generally sections are set at 96" o.c. In this case the customer decided to have a kit modified to create something that transitioned from 6' to 4' thereby shortening the section. There are no "instructions" for that. The job should have been laid out before cementing all the posts in place and that would have become obvious to the contractor installing the project. (see the image below) Second and most importantly, we don't appreciate having our staff and owner "called out" by their personal names on a public forum. Unprofessional and totally not necessary to get any points made. The customer called and emailed multiple times during the course of getting his project installed, speaking with more than one person. Our staff is here to provide fence products, not assist with installation methods over the phone. If this project was too complicated for the customer or his contractor perhaps they should have hired a professional installation company and paid the price."

The overall experience was good. There were definite ups and downs about the project but in the end the company stayed true to their word. The original estimates were very kind and overly willing to give us all the history of Statewide, including their 30 years in business and highly trained foremen. I actually missed our first appointment, but they were kind enough to reschedule with me. The men were on-time and measured the fence quickly. My husband and I had to point out an error on their dimension, which caused them to remeasure a small piece of fence. It was a done deal when the wrote up the estimate $3000 less expensive than the two others that had come our way. However, the issues began there. Had I better understood what I was looking at I would have realized that although the "blue print" had the accurate footage, there arrangement there of was off due to that extra footage that they went back to measure. I was told about 4-6 weeks out, and the project started at 6 week and 1 day out which I was fine with me. I thought that was pretty spot on. A week before the job, I received a phone call about my double wide gate. The gentleman full explained that the measurements were not sustainable for the weight, and that they were going to make some adjustments, which translated to upgrades, at no additional cost to us. When the men arrived they were pleasant and eager to start. They were very knowledgeable in their trade and clearly hard workers. They started immediate. We took a look at the "blue prints" and we spoke VERY clearly about my expectations. Including a 3' gate and a small piece of fence that attached to the back of the garage enclosing the yard. When I returned home I found that the piece enclosing the garage was not complete. Strange because we talked dimension, lining it up with the new pole, breaking the concrete etc. When I called the office Raphael gave me quite the run around and ended the conversation with "Well Ma'am that is why we give you that estimate. You should not sign that if it's not correct." Well, Raphael, I do not debate that, however, YOU are the experts, I AM NOT. I expect that when I ask you to re-measure something like a gate, or small section of fence attaching to the garage, that you are going to do so appropriately. After all this I actually had to do the math for them and point out that 34ft (total length) divided by 8ft(per section) is infact 4.25 sections. Approximately the .25' that was included in the overall footage to include my dinky section between the fence and the garage. I am a working mother and my biggest concern was not if you drew a one inch line on you blueprint from the fence to the garage. I feel as if I was talked down to, as if I was below him. Regardless this ordeal cost me time out of work, and energies not well spent. When the project was completed I found that my 3' gate was made in such away that you could LITERALLY not open it from the outside. The handle was badly installed leaving less than and inch of finger space to lift the latch. Also there was an ugly broken picket on the front facing gate. Raphael was overly happy to have these issues fixed, and they did fix them within 72hours. The final product is incredible. The work is well done and with craftsmanship. I would recommend them and use them again. The price and the value matched and that was worth the money. I just hope that this experience does not get forgotten and that it helps the improve customer service and the initial estimate process because they really have something special here.

We wanted the fence to be consistent because I have the long part so we used them. They were a little hesitant about some of the details. I took the picture and they have something to look on when I took the picture. They said that they cannot do it because of the miter. They were out here the next day. Dealing with them is not easy. They corrected it in the end. I had to fight for it. They were fine. We worked through it. They eventually did what I did see my point. They fixed the stuff. It took a while. I made them do it correctly. The fencing was beautiful. They fabricated the fencing and that was good. They were much more punctual.

It went well. There was delay beyond estimated install date, quickly forgotten. I expected two days of work, they knocked it out in one. Lined up beautifully. It looks great.

The estimator came out promptly and was very courteous. They provided an estimate, however they required a substantial deposit upon acceptance of estimate. Repairs were not performed until several weeks later. I found this very unusual for such a small amount of work. They did not give an exact date of when the work would be performed. The only reason I knew the repairs were going to be made was because Digsafe came out and marked the are a few days prior. The crew that did the repairs were very nice and did an excellent job. I would use them again.

It was a great interaction. They responded very quickly and did a very nice job, we are very happy with them. I thought they were helpful and flexible with us if we were unhappy with something about the fence they would change it. They did a really nice job with the fence itself, it looks great.

I contacted Statewide Fence for an estimate and met with Paul. He provided a complete estimate on several types of fence. After we signed the contract, we were contacted with an installation date. The installation could not be completed in one day because of a tree that needed to be removed. We had the tree removed and rescheduled the final installation. They showed up when promised and completed the job.

Although Statewide's quote was by far the most expensive ($1000 more than the lowest), we liked their product so we went with them. The crew worked from the rep's diagram to determine overall dimensions, but instead of dividing the total length of the vinyl frontage into equal panel lengths, we were given four 8-ft sections, plus a 2-ft. section to close a gap at a corner. The job is amateurish. A foreman and my sales rep acknowledge that the job is "totally unsatisfactory," but their solution is hardly any better. They propose that they lengthen the 2-ft section to 5-ft and cut 3-ft. off the adjacent 8-ft. section, thus giving us two 5-ft. sections----still totally out of balance with the rest of the fence which consists of 8-ft sections. If this were in the backyard we could accept it, but this fence is frontage on our corner lot! Additionally (and the rep had no answer) the installers punched or drilled a hole into a vinyl post and put a large metal screw into it.

We were very happy with this company. The salesman was prompt and courteous. The workers showed up on time and did a terrific job. Everything is straight and level and was exactly what we specified. The fence was finished in two days. They even called the utility companies to mark where all of underground wires were so that we didnt have to. I would definitely recommend this company.
