Recently pitched by a competitor with a lower oil and maintenance contract price. Superior adapted and put me on a better plan, both for oil and for burner service. Would have been nice to get these prices without calling in, but Superior remains compettiive as long as they're reminded to do so.
I changed companies and they found the problem with my boiler and I have had no further problems this winter, thank God
The pros
The cost of home heating oil was really reasonable and we were able to lock in at a good price for the year. When we switched oil companies the owner of Superior came to the house to check the heating system over first. He estimated how much he thought we'd need on a budget plan. The cost of oil is much lower than the company we'd been using for years (Buckley). He was punctual and personable. They have 24/7 emergency service. The oil delivery guys call before they come as requested, they close the gate door on the oil tank access and have not thrown any "hot" additive under the outside tank. They do a good job.
But:
Cons
When we considered switching and were looking around for a new company, I asked Superior several times what the cost of a yearly service contract was. I was quoted $175 by customer service and the boss. When I got my first bill, it became clear that the quoted service contract price is a "promotional deal" for new customers and the regular price is going to be $399 next year. This was never disclosed and is around $100 more than most of the other companies we interviewed or what we have paid previously.
We also discovered another concerning issue that was never disclosed. I don't know if this is true, but I have been told by competitors that this company used to have their own in company service crews but now farms the work out to outside contractors. My experience with their service guy suggests it probably is true. The guy that came to service our furnace arrived in an old beat up unmarked van. He had no insignia on his dirty coveralls or any company identification for me to know who he was or who he worked for. We also had a problem with fan on a thermostat in the furnace room that is suppose to go on when the furnace is running to remove the exhaust build up but stopped working. He wasn't able to deal with that at all but told me he knew what he was doing. After he finished servicing the furnace, he didn't have a tag to leave on it to indicate what kind of servicing was done etc., because he didn't have his regular truck. So far, the furnace works fine but I still have to get someone in to fix the fan issue and my confidence in their ability to properly deal with the furnace is low give the lack of professionalism. Next time, I'll be looking for a company with service techs that are certified and work for the company rather than outsourced contractors.
While it used to be a very good deal, currently the HeatUSA premium is about 45 cents which incorporates a substantial service contract. Not too great a deal at 800 gallons/year. I have grown tired of the service of superior plus -- a few years ago they let my tank run dry (no notice of a missing delivery) when I missed a payment by a week (there is no automatic payment). The woman was quite nasty and said I would be on COD for the next few deliveries, which didn't actually happen. I have two zones and they declared their contract didn't cover zone valve failure unless I had a supplement I'd never been told about. Their service people are pretty good (better than Petro). Recently I got a note that my tank vent was an improper size and I would receive no further deliveries unless resolved, which may be true but it has been successfully receiving oil for at least the past 25 years including at least 7 annual tuneups without mentioning it. Typical "big company" attitude. Time for a local company.
