It was clear right away that he would have to come back another day as the lumberyard where he wanted to buy the cedar post is closed on Sundays. He finished the corner board that day, I paid the $450 and received a handwritten receipt for labor and material. Then I didn't hear back for a while (they were still busy with a big job), meanwhile our porch wasn't safe to use as one side of railing was missing. Meanwhile I went to the lumberyard myself to get the railing post. After three weeks and repeated calls/text messages I received a call (at 10:30, being at work) whether they could come at noon the same day. I was a bit surprised but made sure I was home by noon. Unfortunately, Tobey was late more than half an hour. He then installed the two railing posts in about 3.5 hours. Then I was surprised as he asked for $300 once done. Of that, $50 were for material (the only piece of wood that was used was a short piece of pressure treated 2x8 or so, and he had to rent a circular saw from Home Depot because his colleague had forgotten to leave him his, but should I pay for that?). At no time before was it mentioned that the original offer of $450 would have to be corrected. I said that I was surprised and was subsequently told that that was the price Toby's boss had suggested, but I could decide on how much I want to pay. Now what kind of business practice is that? This put me in an uncomfortable spot, and I agreed to pay $200 ($150 on top of material). I did not receive a receipt.
I actually liked Toby a lot, and he did a good job, and based on that alone, I would hire them again. If there ever is a next time, I'd make sure we get a written offer, detailed written (i.e. on a computer) receipt, and that there are no surprises.
job went very well. completed on the stated date. very neat, picked up at end of day.
I know David Santoro about three years ago, when my neighbor innovated their bathroom. They hired David Santoro to do the job. After the completion of the remodeling, my neighbor proudly invited me to visit the newly innovated bathroom. It was great. I secretly thought that someday I would invite David to do my remodeling projects. This summer, I start to remodel my kitchen and bath. At begin with, I want to save money, so I hired a handy man who claimed he was capable to do the project. This was a mistake I made. The handyman had proved that he has no ability to handle such project whatsoever. He made many low level mistakes that I could see by my naked eyes. I had to watch his doing every minute and I was worried every minute, until my tolerance to the end. I called David about my situation. David was so kind. He immediately agreed to take over this big mess and heading the project in the right track. David Santoro did not disappoint me. The crew members are polite, responsible, and knowledgeable. They striped down the walls, ceilings, and floors. Rewind and upgraded complicated electronic circuit and plumbing system. The carpenter, Shawn, is a very skillful master. He is in charge of all cabinets and some tile work. I expressed briefly my idea, Shawn immediately got a point and did exactly what I want and even better ! David is a very smart man. He knows all trends nowadays in contractor’s realm. He creatively installed a hidden TV under a cabinet, an automatic light in a closet, and tiled very intricate marble mosaic floor … I consider myself a picky client. I myself had been training at art school for many years. It is not easy to make me pleased about a project, in particular, art involved. For David Santoro’s company, I give them two thumbs up. The project started on August 27, 2012. It delayed target completion day due to miss out ordering by previous handyman. It is not David Santoro’s fault. For what have done, I could envision the future kitchen and bath: It is vintage meets modern, elegant yet casual, convenient yet functional. It has timeless beauty and it is truly a masterpiece !
