"Thank you for your business and for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate the positive feedback you gave us, as well as letting us know where we can improve. We've emphasized to John the importance of clarifying the energy efficient ratings with customers, as they can be very confusing. We can certainly understand your frustration upon seeing that the new windows you just had installed weren't as energy efficient as you thought they would be. I looked into the specific details of your window order and compared the ratings on your window to the Energy Star ratings in the Northeast (I accessed an Alside information sheet that can be found at: [Hyperlink Removed]). If you look at that info sheet, you will see that there are two "Options" for Energy Star Requirements or the Equivalent Energy Performance. Both of those use U-factor and SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) to rate the energy efficiency of the window. In the chart labeled "Option A" it requires a U-factor of .27 or less with any SHGC for the Northern Region. In the chart labeled "Option B" it shows 3 different U-factor options (.28, .29, and .30) that are also considered energy efficienty if the SHGC meets specific standards (.32, .37, or .42--or better--corresponding to the U-factor options above). There are many factors that go into these ratings, including window size. Although your windows are not at the .27 U-factor, they do meet the requirements for Energy Star rating based on their combined U-factor and SHGC ratings. I hope this information helps clarify things for you. Please feel free to call us in the office if you have any further questions. Thank you!"

On the day of the installation, the two workers did not completely cover the floor areas, as they sometimes traveled from the mud room, through the living room, to the front entryway. They installed both doors in one day. The head worker returned the following day (per our request) to redo the caulking at the bottom of the front entry way, replace some damaged outdoor molding (which he said was fine 'as is' the previous day), as well as replace damaged interior trim at the rear door. We were pleased at first, until having insulation work done. The insulation worker had to get a measure of air in the house. They noticed, along with a carpenter (who was doing work for us), that both doors had significant air leakage at the top and side. The front door was installed too low, not allowing us to put a floor mat. The trim was installed too wide, and the workers cut the latch (lowered the door). The rear door closes, but not properly. We had several repair items documented by a carpenter in order to clear out balance of $2313 (which Ed, the owner, did; we emailed him pictures). We are still waiting to have both doors repaired by another company, and have dealt with cold air in the house throughout the winter.
John recently sent us the following email, validating our poor experience:
"I sincerely apologize about your door I wasn't aware of it till they showed me the pictures. It is embarrassing we had an installer that did several jobs for us and then the install on your door there is no way that he should've left it like that that was the last job that he did for us. Ed told me about the discount that he gave you I still feel bad about it I apologize I hope you realize that that is not the type of work that we do. I went there with good intentions.I was shocked at the install.I hope the discount that we gave you covered everything I wish you and your family the best thank you John United Better Homes."
Overall, I would warn others of working with this company. Their workers were poorly skilled, which indicated to us that they do not vet their staff well. Additionally, the owner or another supervisor should have visited during the installation to make sure everything was properly done. This has been a very aggravating and lengthy process.
"We can understand your frustration and upset over the poor installation. As John indicated in his email to you, this is not representative of the work that United Better Homes does. Although it may seem like a logical conclusion based on your experience, assuming that we don't vet our staff well is not an accurate assessment. We're a family-owned business and, in our experience, that gives us greater control over the quality of the work we do. The installer in question is part of another family-owned window and door company, a company that we've had a working relationship with over the last two years. Unfortunately, the winter months can be challenging for smaller window and door companies; sometimes companies have to lay off their workers. Such was the case with the family we are talking about. We had a few jobs this winter that we needed some help on, and we had no qualms about hiring this installer to work with us. After the issues with your installation, we confronted this installer about his work, and he informed us that he had been suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome (which obviously impacted his ability to perform installations up to standard) but didn't tell us because he needed the work. We regret that your installation had to happen in order to make us aware of the issue. In light of the circumstances, we understood that you felt more comfortable working with the handyman company that you had hired to repair the doors; we agreed to cover their quote, as well as to credit you the remaining balance that was due for the work completed. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding in the unfortunate circumstances surrounding your installation."
"Thank you for your business and for taking the time to review our company. Enjoy your new siding and doors, and please let us know if we can be of any assistance in the future."
"Thank you for your business, and thanks for taking the time to write a review. Enjoy your new roof!"
The team arrived on time and performed all job as promised in three days. All work was done with excellent quality. During the job all furniture in the house was protected to avoid dusting and damage. After completion the installers left the work area clean. They met and even exceeded my expectations. The replacement windows look great. I strongly recommend United Better Homes..

After installation I noticed that the windows were not sealed, I can see gaps around most of them and called to have someone come back. They sent the same person who saw the gaps and re-caulked around some of the windows.
It rained, and one of the windows leaked profusely. I called and asked that they send someone other than the original installer as I now had doubts about the quality of his work. I was told that someone different would come out next week but they couldn't tell me when as they'd send someone between jobs. They repeatedly told me I didn't need to be home but I'm not sure how they'd know which window it was if I wasn't here to show them and I'm not sure how they could be sure it was fixed without seeing both sides of the window. This being the second time that I called with an issue, and me telling them I had water in my basement, I would think would warrant sending a supervisor to see what the heck was going on and to check to see if the work was done properly.
So today my doorbell rang, and they sent the same installer after I told them specifically several times that I wanted someone different to come check all the work that was done. He put a little more spray foam and caulk around the window, and called it fixed. Hopefully it is.
This experience has shown me the level of interest they have in actually listening to what the customer is saying, making sure that the work is done properly and that the customer is satisfied with it, which in my opinion isn't much.
"I'm sorry that you felt that you weren't being heard by our office staff, that's certainly not our intention. As we honor all of our installations with a lifetime labor and service warranty, we aim to install things right the first time, and if any issues come up, we aim to correct them as soon as we can, with the person we feel is best for the job. The installer who came out to re-caulk your windows has many years of experience with repair issues, he's the supervisor of that division of our company, and that's why we sent him back out to do the repairs--he is the best man we have for that job. When we do a window installation, the caulking takes 24 hours to set, a process that can be affected by swings in temperatures and weather conditions (the day that we did the install was unseasonably warm for November--in the 70's). If any caulking sets funny, there may be issues such as what you experienced. We take leaking concerns very seriously and when our repairman came out to re-caulk the windows of concern, it was drizzling out. Again, caulking can be affected by weather conditions. When you called to let us know that there was one window leaking, we believed that the reason the caulking didn't set properly the second time is because we reapplied it while it was raining. We understand that you felt we weren't addressing the problem soon enough and we apologize that we may not have explained this to you fully. We didn't want to send someone out to re-caulk the window of concern until the weather had cleared up. It's a pretty straightforward issue, one that doesn't require us to go inside your home to take care of. Again, we chose to send the same man to repair the issue as this is his area of expertise, and he was already familiar with your project. We regret that you felt we weren't taking your concerns seriously, or that we didn't respond quickly enough. Based on our many years of experience in window installations, we approached this how we felt would allow us to best take care of the issue for you. We apologize if you didn't feel that was the case. Please let us know if we can be of further service to you."
