I had a wonderful experience with Tom Ricci, owner of American Building Co, whom I found through Angie’s List. He responded to my request for a mason right away, arrived exactly when we had agreed, and clearly explained the work that needed to be done. He sent me a detailed quote that same evening and completed the job effortlessly. His craftsmanship was truly impressive, and the finished result—repairs to my front steps—was impeccable. Tom is also incredibly versatile in his knowledge; he’s a true jack of all trades. I highly recommend him!

Tom and his crew were very punctual all 3 days they were at the house. They were very respectful to my wife and myself, and made sure we were appraised of the progress towards completion. He even offered to get rid of some old furniture left by the previous owners. After I was able to go downstairs and inspect the work, I was impressed with the paint job on the floor as well as the pipes. The basement was left clean with very little paint on the wood paneling (which was going anyways). The only thing that could have been better would be quicker responses to emails at the beginning of the process, so the job could have been completed earlier. Overall, we are very happy with the service provided.

The job was completed in a reasonable time frame, from the exterior seems to be done adequately, however less than a year later work did not hold up, trim corner was missing, insulation was not adequately done, resulted in a re-freeze of pipes, which was the reason for service. Sheet rock was done well.

Tom was responsive, very clear in explaining what was going to be done, and quick to point out that he had good reviews on here. Which is true, but I should have figured that 15 good reviews might not be enough. Initial price was 2000. I made an offer at 1,500 which was not contested and accepted without any condition. Job was done fairly fast and quickly. Tom mentioned that they would remove and dispose of the tile, and remove the mastic that could also contain asbestos. My primary goal was of course to get the asbestos out of my house. He added that they would and a layer of paint on the floor as "an extra layer of safety". The painting job was done without protecting the walls, so marks could be seen on the moldings and walls. In my case it didn't matter as I was going to repaint the walls anyway. I believe I mentioned that to him which might be the reason of the careless painting job Another contractor pointed out afterwards that there was still mastic underneath the paint, and you could actually scrub it with your fingernails (I have pictures which I can't seem to find a place to post on here...). When reached out to, Tom mentioned that since he reduced the price, he couldn't perform as good of a job and that "something had to give". I mentioned that if my offer was too low and was going to compromise the quality of the job, that is something that he should have mentioned before, which he responded by asking if I would ask my mechanics for a 25% discount. He mentioned that he was hired to remove the tile, and that there wasn't any tile left. That is true, there isn't any tile left, but I did respond that I hired him to remove the asbestos, regardless of what it means was supposed to be actually removed. He said the mastic *could* contain asbestos, but doesn't necessarily do. He added that he could give me a quote to remove the mastic entirely if I wanted to, which made me laugh and I then ended the conversation. I'll let the members be the judges of who's wrong, and it might be me. On my hand, I will not use Tom's services again, nor would I recommend him to anyone I know.

Response from American Building Company LLC
"I am really very surprised by [Member name removed] recent report when we left that job I personally asked [Member name removed] if she was satisfied with the job which she said yes she was. The Job Scope was 1. To apply masonry scrub coat on all exposed sections of chimney 2.To install sheet rock on all damaged sections of staircase walls 3. To install supplied wainscot panels on staircase walls bottom 4 ft. only 4.To install supplied molding system for wainscot panels 5. To install new spindles on staircase handrail 6. To install screen door on side of house 7.To attempt to make repairs on damaged kitchen cabinet doors 8.Above numbers 6 and 7 are included as a gratuity in consideration for above work. The scope of the work was drawn up specifically to keep costs down at clients request in addition my son is not allowed to operate any power tools only to assist me, and I brought both my sons to do additional free work cleaning interior of house and cutting entire lawn so that we could actually do this work which was no easy task [Member name removed] oversaw all aspects of this job and seemed very satisfied with all we tried to do for her and her son which again is why we are so surprised and disappointed with no phone calls to communicate this only a bad report a year and half later. I did try to call to find out what we could do to satisfy [Member name removed] but she ended the phone conversation abruptly we are very sorry for any dissatisfaction on her part but we feel as we performed our part above and beyond our requirements and feel as all other reports on Angie's list reflect the quality and integrity of our work."

We were VERY pleased with Tom, his helper (son) and the work they accomplished! Tom was easy to contact, returning calls promptly and providing thorough answers to our questions. He arrived on time, did the work efficiently and left our basement in great shape. He was cheerful and affable, very knowledgeable, and offered practical suggestions for ways we could improve and maintain the foundation of our aging home. We enjoyed having him in our home and greatly appreciated his work, so much so that we immediately engaged him to do an additional and more extensive job in the basement. We felt his price to be very fair and competitive for the work done.

It went SUPER! The results are amazing! Our old, dingy, grumpy-looking, crumbling basement has been transformed into a clean, bright, useable space for us and our grandchildren to enjoy. Tom and his helper (son) worked very hard, using their time and equipment efficiently to minimize the inconvenience of the process. They moved all the basement shelves and storage items themselves, a significant task in itself. In the process of doing the work, Tom discovered a leaking sewer pipe which would have gone unnoticed and caused major problems later on, for which we are especially grateful. We felt his price to be very fair and the work done to be of very high quality. He responded quickly to our phone call requesting an estimate and was able to schedule the work shortly thereafter. His contracts were presented professionally; he is licensed and bonded. His personality is engaging and optimistic and we were delighted to have him in our home.
