Excellent. I am a do-it-yourself painter and wallpaperer, but I knew this staircase was beyond my comfort zone. The walls of the open stairwell rise two-stories and are a rough surface (textured paint). The old-fashioned stairs have no landing; the steps are wide against the wall and taper down to nothing as they curve around the center banister.  With deep red walls and white ceiling planned, creating a clean sharp ceiling line was important to me. I decided to put the job in the hands of a professional.

I called SVM Properties based on a recommendation from a friend. SVM owner Steve returned my call promptly. At his on-site inspection he estimated it would take about 3 days to complete the job. He was not immediately available to start, so we arranged a start date a couple of weeks later.

Each day, Steve arrived on time, just before 8:30 a.m. and worked through to about 4:30 p.m., stopping only for a brief lunch break. At the end of each day, the work area was left immaculate - the only sign that Steve had been there was the fresh new color on the walls and woodwork.

The deep color required two coats on the rough walls. There was a large and long crack on one wall that Steve repaired and applied a similar rough surface to it. As fussy as I am, I was happy with the way the repair blended with the rest of the wall.

On the third day, Steve finished before lunch and adjusted the price accordingly, charging me for 2.5 days.

On final inspection, I was thrilled with his work. The edges are beautifully cut everywhere I looked - baseboards, ceilings, door frames, window - especially the ceiling line in the stairwell. I will append a couple of photos of the staircase before and showing Steve's work.
