About us

Since 1986, Pool & Patio Center has been providing swimming pool, hot tub and spa owners in Greater Rhode Island Outstanding, Outrageous & Unexpected Customer Service™ Pool & Patio Center is RI’s premier source for pools, hot tubs, spas, swimming pool and spa chemicals, pool and spa water chemistry products and accessories. We are a family-owned business where our slogan is the icon of our commitment to customer service and satisfaction. We truly care about our customers, our staff and our reputation so your satisfaction will always be the foundation of our business. Pool & Patio Center's Promise Pool & Patio Center strives to … • Provide the highest quality products at the most reasonable price • Provide an OUTSTANDING, OUTRAGEOUS & UNEXPECTED™ customer service experience • Make It Easy® EVERY step of the way • Strive to earn your TRUST and CONFIDENCE with our nationally-trained and certified team Most individuals who enter our industry do so in quite the opposite manner than we did--they accumulate the service industry experience then open a retail store. We assembled the retail, corporate and business knowledge first, the industry knowledge second and then opened a retail store in 1986. This path allowed our family-owned business to professionalize and ‘polish’ our tarnished industry by offering excellence in customer service backed by a highly educated and trained team. When you don't use Pool & Patio Center for servicing and installing your swimming pool and hot tub, things might not go as smoothly as planned. Through the years, we’ve seen and heard it all. . . Confusing and bad choices made that will impact you for years to come--because a company recommends what’s easy for them instead of you Companies selling you everything ‘under the sun’ every time you walk in their front door (this is the dirtiest secret in our industry because a seasonal pool store may only see you once or twice a season--so they try to get as much money from you on each visit) Companies that promise you early delivery or installation with no way of getting a refund when they fail to meet their promises Companies that do work for you only until they get busier with more profitable work—then tell you “We're booked through August” Unreturned phone calls Pools built with poor circulation--requiring more maintenance time, sanitizing products and money Mass-merchant, internet, inexperienced or new companies (the guy with a vacuum hose sticking out of the back of his truck) that don’t offer customers the support, advice and experience they need not only at time of sale but also during and after warranty period Technical interruptions that renders your pool or hot tub unusable Companies that will not take responsibility Companies that promise a hot tub site delivery but when they get to your house they drop your hot tub or spa in your driveway And we can go on and on…

First let me say that I've been a customer of this company for 10+ years and it is not my practice to go on the internet writing reviews, I am way too busy to be bothered to do this. HOWEVER, in this kind of situation it's a full stop moment and I need to make sure I put some information out for other people to be aware of. This situation was unreal and blows my mind how any business in today's economy can conduct themselves like this. Maybe I should open a pool store since demand seems to be so good you can just make your own rules up as you go. Here is the story: I ordered a pool pump to be installed from this business at my residence. The technicians were friendly and helpful and were able to remove my old working pump and install the new pool pump but could not get the pump to work (I even tipped them). They disconnected from the old pump and hooked up to the new pump the direct electrical connection to my home's electrical service (hmmm, does that seem like electrical work?? - lets move on). The breaker kept tripping and so I was told that I needed to have an electrician fix "my homes electrical problems" and that they suspected that an inline mechanical timer was the cause of the breaker tripping with the new pump. They told me they did not have anyone to resolve the issue and that they were not certified to do electrical work and that I would have to have an electrician come fix the issue with the brand new installed pump that would not work, leaving me with no way to circulate my pool water which I recently brought into chemical balance. They told me they have only one electrical subcontractor they could send but not for 4 days or longer would he be available. I asked them to reinstall my old pool pump which they did the same day. They called me back the next day and told me they had refunded my money and that they think it would be best not to continue working with me. (I got off the phone and laughed hysterically by the way, WOW) To anyone who is thinking of contracting work with this company, BEWARE. The owner (Annette) even got involved by listening in on a phone discussion I was having with their service manager and then interjected on that call out of nowhere (WHO DOES THAT??? WOW) rude, tried to use intimidation by over talking and throwing around comments about having an attorney in the family and also would do absolutely nothing to try and resolve the issue with the newly installed pump but rather continued to tell me how many successful installs they have done and how there is a problem with my electrical service. Suffice to say the manual for the pump AND the manufacturer even state that the pump should be installed by " a certified electrician." The old pump was reinstalled and was instantly back working again. Could have taken them 1 hour of time (which i would have gladly paid for) to have an electrician come out IF there was actually a problem with the timer being inline to bypass it but instead they actually sent their service manager out to remove the new pump and reinstall my old pump which took hours due to needing to cut and fabricate pvc piping to the old pump again. BRILLIANT business strategy for building and sustaining an account base! I'll be sure to share this post EVERYWHERE on social media and with EVERYONE I know in the area who owns a pool By the way from the looks of it as I continue to post this information around social media it would seem like I am one of a great many who have made the mistake of doing anything more than having my water tested and buying pool chemicals from this place. STAY AWAY
Response from Pool & Patio Center, Inc.
"We understand there was an issue with your existing electrical wiring and we are very sorry the new energy-efficient pump was not able to function properly with your existing electrical. As you know, the electrician we recommend is not an employee nor is he our subcontractor, is on vacation and unavailable for your tight time-frame. We are sorry this relationship did not work out, though we are glad we were able to remove the new pump and re-install your old one just a few hours later at no cost to you. This allowed you to maintain proper filtration and circulation, which are vital to ensuring clean, clear, healthy swimming pool water. Our immediate action gives you time to contact your electrician to make the necessary corrections to your wiring if you wish to upgrade to an energy-efficient pump. As we explained, nationally trained and certified pool and spa professionals are only able to perform field service work, such as replacing pool pumps. We cannot perform the duties of a licensed electrician, such as accessing your timer, circuitry or breaker."

We were immediately greeted by Kevin when we walked in the door. We told him what we were looking for and he gave us our options. He was not pushy when we told him we needed to think about it. We decided to go for it and went back the following week and ordered the pool. The installer came to our home a few days later and measured the yard and scheduled the install. The installation from Riken Construction went smoothly. Rick had actually suggested a different route to take with the electrical that would save the integrity of our small yard while saving us about $600 from him digging the trench. It was nice to deal with an honest contractor. The yard was a project after the install but they prepare you beforehand. You will have to landscape!  The pool looks beautiful. The owner Annette and Manager Greg were extremely responsive and gladly answered my millions of questions and never made me feel like I was bothering them. There were a few adjustments that were made after the installation and the service team was respectful and professional.

"Thank you, [Member name removed], for taking the time to share the experience you had with Pool & Patio Center and our installer. Frequently, there is a learning curve with getting a new swimming pool and we strive to make that learning curve as short and as easy as possible. Also, it is not unusual for there to be small adjustments after installation. Thank you, again, for placing your trust in Pool & Patio Center."

"Thank you, [removed members name], for taking time to comment about Pool & Patio Center on Angie's List. Yes, your pool's age, structure and style--along with the manner in which your cement patio was poured--required the coping to be removed in order to install your liner. Don't hesitate to contact us any time you have a question or concern."

After going to a few pool stores, really liked the people at Pool and Patio. They were knowledgeable and offered cost saving options. I felt good after ordering my pool. But they sub-contract the installation. While in the end the installation was fine there were some annoyances. One was they had to dig up the old support blocks, think patio blocks. But then just left them all over the place. Second, it was a young crew and I think they were having too much fun with the bobcat. The tracks took off the top portion of a small section of the asphalt driveway. This happens from quick acceleration. I complained about it to Pool and Patio but the person handling this was quite unsympathetic. That is why I rate professionalism and responsiveness as a D. Based on the sales people I would rate them as A's. Overall I still gave them a B. While I won't use them again (as there will not be anymore pools) I would still recommend checking them out.

"[member name removed], thank you for taking time to share your comments because we really do value your business. Customer comments help us fine-tune our customer service. We do use a subcontractor to install our above ground pools, but as we explained to you and all our above ground pool customers, we give you OUR State of Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration number to list on your building permit so that Pool & Patio Center is responsible for your pool installation (which means that Pool & Patio Center is your contractor). Not all pool companies do this; the reason we do so is to reassure and protect our customers. The gentleman that operated the bobcat was the owner of our installation company (he is 38 years old and is flattered that he looks younger--though he does have younger employees on his crew). He remembers your site well because he recommended that you remove a fence post so that he could avoid the bobcat traveling back and forth over your driveway—which would lessen and limit driveway damage. You did not want to remove the fence post so your decision restricted the bobcat access to only your driveway. I understand your reluctance to do so because your fence post was cemented in. In light of not wanting to remove your fence post, he also gave you the option of using a wheel barrel to move material to your new pool site instead of using the bobcat (which would have lessened his bobcat use over your driveway) but you declined this because there would have been an additional hand-versus-machinery charge (and we all understand that we don’t want any extra charges when we are having work done at our home--including me!). These decisions increased the possibility of driveway damage versus easily fixable lawn damage. Pool & Patio Center tries so hard to make sure our customers are aware of the entire installation process from beginning to end and everything in between. We do this by having an agreement/contract that is legal sized with an additional page which includes bulleted and shaded areas to make it easier to read and understand. Then we have you not only sign the front and back but also initial the ‘sore spots’—like the potential of driveway damage. We actually refer to our agreements as ‘homework’ (because they are so wordy and detailed) but we would rather lose the sale than you not be aware of all the situations that could occur. One of the reasons our agreements are far more thorough and detailed than other pool stores is because we do not want to paint a ‘rosy’ picture of heavy construction equipment causing potential property damage. Nevertheless, in light of all this you were still unprepared for our installation process and we are sorry and frustrated for that because we feel that we did take the proper steps to lessen the chances of property damage. We do understand, however, that when property damage occurs, it comes as a surprise. Sometimes we forget that a bobcat is a piece of heavy construction equipment and the nature of construction equipment is that they can and do cause property damage. We are always joking amongst ourselves that we wish we could invent a way to make bobcats fly! For over 28 years, our customers’ satisfaction has been the foundation of our business. Our goal is that our relationship lasts throughout your pool ownership. There has been a ‘glitch’ in our relationship that we wish didn’t happen and for that we are sorry."

"Yes, your automatic pool cleaner would have been too expensive to repair ($821.13) and since our automatic cleaners start at $799.00 we felt this repair was not economical so we recommended purchasing a new cleaner."

We have had a very good experience with Pool and Patio over the years. They did the original installation of our 15ft above ground pool 5 years ago. Due to our fault, the liner failed and we had to have it replaced. These guys are some of the most punctual service people I've ever experienced, which is rare and all the more appreciated.
They removed the old liner and thoroughly prepped the surface for the new one (I had received detailed instructions on how to ready the liner prior to their arrival). After they were through with the installation, they left me with more detailed instructions on my next steps and when to call them to come back to finish the installation. I don't think they could have been more professional or polite. Very good service.
Although the pricing is mostly fair, it would be nice to give repeat customers a little discount - just as a thank you for doing business with us over the years.

Entered the showroom in December looking at hot tubs that would suit the needs of my wife and myself. Pool and Patio had what we were looking for in stock and ready for quick delivery after the holiday season. Luckily, the weather held up and we were able to take delivery shortly after the new year. There is nothing better than sitting in my new hot tub after a long days work and stare up at a brisk winter sky!

Used Pool and Patio for several years. They know what they're doing, but it's no bargain - they are not bashful when it comes to charging for service calls, and then I found them less responsive than I would have liked when there were problems with work they did. Nothing major, but they claim to be the best at service - that may be true if you don't mind paying and paying and paying for every service plus some service their own techs cause.

"Pool & Patio Center greatly cares about our customer relationships and our reputation. Each and every day we strive to make our customer's satisfaction the foundation of our business. Unfortunately, this relationship did not work out. The vast majority of our customers have found that our slogan "Outstanding, Outrageous & Unexpected Customer Service Since 1986" indeed does fulfill their expectations. They also feel that our prices are in line with other knowledgeable, professional pool and hot tub companies."

I think their prices are fairly high, but most of them seem to have similar prices. I am pretty much pleased with the services. They open and close the pool. I'd use them again if I had to.

"We thank [member name removed] and all our customers for taking time to post comments on Angie's List. Even comments that are less than flattering help us help our customers. Our pool openings and closings include 25-30 minutes of cleaning and vacuuming and includes closing chemicals. Pool & Patio Center constantly keeps track of not only competitors' pricing but also their inclusions and exclusions. Most other competitors don't clean and vacuum and some charge extra for adding chemicals."

They did a good job, and everything is working fine now. But I should have asked for an estimate on the filter - I was surprised it came to so much. I guess a pool is a bottomless money pit. I'll probably have them close the pool in the Fall. Next year I'll just have them open the regular part of the pool without doing the spa, which cost $150 extra. I think I can handle the spa myself,

They deliver supplies when they open the pool and spend time cleaning the pool if time permits and we've done preliminary cleanup of debris and leaves. They provide free water analysis and recommendations for treatment if necessary.

We originally were just going to get a new liner for our 15yr old above-ground pool, but when they arrived to install it, determined the shell was pitted and in pretty bad condition. The money spent on the liner was transferred to the purchase of a new pool easily and the guy we dealt with at the store (sorry, don't have his name) was friendly, and gave us a few freebies (including winter pool cover). The pool has been installed and aside from our error in ordering too small of a pool (!), it looks great and the installation was meticulous. My husband said they took great pains to level all the supports and make sure everything was OK. For some reason the pool ladder wasn't on the loading slip and they didn't bring it (my husband explained we did order one). The next day, there it was on on doorstep, delivered no fuss! We are very pleased with the quality of work, friendliness and efficiency of Pool and Patio Center's staff.
