We replaced the columns and front landing on our home in 2007 through services delivered by another general contractor.  The old general contractor used pine bases on the columns and did not prevent water from entering the columns at the top.  Consequently, water got inside the columns and caused the soft (pine base) to rot.  The constant exposure of wet wood on the bluestone landing caused the masonry work to deteriorate.  The overhang on the front door needed to be jacked up and the old base removed.  The top of the columns were sealed to prevent future moisture from entering the columns, and the masonry was repaired.  A new base was made out of a non-wood material which should prevent our having to repair or replace the base again for a very long time.  Red House did this work in December.  They will return in the spring to replace the base of the second column, close the joints on the railings attached to the columns, and repaint.  Their work was performed in a professional manner and at a reasonable cost.  I will use them again for future work at our home.
