I broke a personal rule by answering my front door when a York Home Performance sales person, Pat Byers, was in the neighborhood soliciting business. (Normally I do the soliciting after checking Angie's List.) However, I had been thinking about insulation improvements for over a year. Mr. Byers did NOT use any high-pressure tactics. I call my local utility, Baltimore Gas and Electric, to verify York Home Performance was on their list of approved home energy auditors and insulation installers. They were, and it turns out they are one of BGE's most-used vendors. A date was set for the audit to be performed. On the appointed day, Dirk Ness arrived with the necessary equipment to complete the audit. This took about one hour and was VERY thorough. Dirk said he would complete a detailed report and we agreed on a date/time for him to return to discuss his findings. I emphasized that I also wanted a proposal to actually implement any improvements recommended. About 1 week later Dirk returned to go over the report. The most significant problems were excessive airflow, especially from the attic, and insufficient insulation in the attic. While upgrading our windows would also save some energy, Dirk did not see that as cost-effective. Dirk presented a proposal to air-seal the attic (including top plates, ceiling fixtures, electrical & plumbing penetrations, chaseways, and the access panel), air seal basement band joists, install soffit venting baffles, install attic insulation to R49 (18-inches), weatherstrip exterior doors, and install a bathroom fan on a timer to ensure sufficient fresh air flow now that the house had much better sealing. Total proposed price was $4,200.00 which would be offset by a BGE rebate of $2,000.00 (net price: $2,200.00). Estimated payback period was 5 years due to lower utility bills. Having agreed to the proposal, Dirk sent me a contract. Over the next week I requested a few modifications to the contract which were readily accepted. I found York Home Performance very flexible and anxious to keep the customer happy. Following contract signing, we agreed on a mutually acceptable installation date about 6 weeks in the future. On the day the work was scheduled a 2-person crew (normally 3-person, but one was on vacation) arrived and went right to work. They were exceptionally thorough about covering anything that might get dirty. Notably, our attic access is in our walk-in closet and they covered ALL of the clothing with plastic. The work went quickly, taking about 5 hours start to finish. The crew was very respectful of the house and its contents. My wife and I almost immediately noted the improved temperatures on our 2nd floor, which is normally warm in the summer and cool in the winter compared to the rest of the house. About a week after the crew left I discovered that our over-the-air television signal was not working. We have a rooftop antenna with cabling which runs through the attic, including a signal amplifier. I suspected power to the amplifier may have been accidentally cut during the attic work. York quickly arranged a date/time for a crew to stop by. I explained the most likely cause of the problem and where it was probably located. A crew member went into the attic and indeed found a power brick had accidentally been dislodged. After plugging it in, OTA TV worked fine. About 7 weeks after the work was completed we received our $2,000 rebate from BGE. My wife and I were both VERY impressed with York Home Performance. They are easy to work with, are truly interested in having happy customers, offer competitive prices, and are respectful of their customer's homes. Recommended!
