Reading and interpreting blueprints: Welders read and understand blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine project design. Measuring and cutting materials: Welders measure and cut materials to specifications. Welding materials: Welders use the correct materials to join metals together. Monitoring the welding process: Welders monitor the welding process and adjust heat as needed. Maintaining equipment: Welders maintain equipment and machinery. Other duties of a welder include: Fabricating or modifying parts, equipment, and other items Heating and tempering metals Designing, laying out, and cutting special parts Repairing machinery and other components Marking up construction drawings and specifications Welders may need to have the following skills: Mathematical skills, including interpreting sketches, spatial reasoning, and understanding 2D and 3D diagrams Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and stand for long periods Good vision, either naturally or with correction The ability to tolerate extreme temperatures
