I initially contacted carl tree service for consultation regarding a huge 40+ dawn redwood in our frontyard. We were considering either pruning or removal of the tree depending on total cost including maintenance.Matt Simoni had provided itemized work list for pruning the tree (1450$) and removing the tree (2750$) and an estimate for each work type based on inspection of the tree and the property.
When I inquired through email about the cost of yearly maintenance should we decide to prune the tree, Matt stated it would be maintenance free for 5 years. This estimate directly influenced our decision to keep the tree and prune it rather than remove it completely
On the day of scheduled service, the team showed up on time. Only one person was pruning the tree at any one time. Even though they spent the whole day at the property, the work was not performed as agreed upon. The team left dead branches on the driveway, the lawn and one big branch in the bush. In addition there was a "smucker's" wrap and soda bottle on my lawn. More importantly, big dead branches continues to fall extensively from the tree (photos taken today 4 days after the said pruning).
The following is the itemized work list provided by Matt Simoni with my notes in parentheses:
Scope of Work A:
Prune dawn redwood in front yard.
-Raise low branches to provide clearance away from structures and driveways ( DONE)
-Remove hazardous deadwood. (NOT DONE)
-Thin out center as much as possible. (NOT DONE)
Clean up and haul away all brush and debris. (NOT DONE)
Price $1,450.00
Furthermore, at the end of the day one member of the team told me and my husband that the tree is rotten from inside and needs to be removed or it needs yearly maintenance to reassess. When I expressed my surprise that we were not informed of this prior since we were considering removal vs. pruning, they claimed they only realized that halfway through the job when he climbed the tree and saw a hole in the trunk that would collect water and cause the rot. However he was able to point the hole to me and was visible from the ground.
At this point it feels as if we wasted 1450$.
The equipment used included: crane truck, bucket truck, chipper and truck to haul wood chips, flat-bed truck to haul away large sections of three tree trunks, heavy-duty stump grinder. The cost of the entire job was "good" in view of the equipment needed, the work-time involved and the completely satisfactory results.
Also, it should be noted that I saved $100 by telling them they could come whenever they wanted, since there was no rush to the job and they said they would do this job when they were in the neighborhood.
Finally, even though their ratings were low, I decided a tree was a tree, and once gone, I could care less. I couldn't have been more surprised and pleased with their service.
They did not clean up after themselves very well. The arborists did a good job at cutting the trees, but the gopher did not clean up very well.
"The member called our company and asked us to provide an insurance estimate for landscape repair work due to damage that was caused by a truck that had driven through her yard. Our estimator provided the member with a proposal, which she accepted and we completed the work and she paid us. Regardless of what she believes the material and/or labor expenses were. She hired us (based on the proposal), we did the work, and she paid us."
