My gas fireplace was not staying lit for long periods of time, so I called Joe. I found him condescending on the phone, so I told him I would let him know if we decided to hire him. After a week, I could not get ahold of any other contractors, so I decided to ask him for his help. He said the total charge would between $150-$185. Upon arrival, he was not wearing a mask. I asked him to put one on, and he said that he minded. He wore it around his chin or under his nose the entire time. His personality was abrasive, but I tried to be personable asking about his industry. After about 30 minutes in which he replaced the light switch and cleaned under the unit, he said the charge would be $210. I asked why it was no longer between $150 and $185, and he said parts. The only part he replaced was a simple light switch, which costs at most a dollar. I asked why a simple switch costs an extra $25 minimum. His response, "Write the check for $185 and never call me again." I asked again for an explanation, and he refused saying he, "needed to get the **** out of here."

"This fine young man is a Math teacher. We need to excel in math as we are in competition with China , India, and other countries . As a senior citizen, I can find the younger generation to have little respect for the elderly. This gentleman is certainly one of them. He knows more than me and wants to teach me how to run my business mathematically with great hubris. After his attack as I entered his home, shortly thereafter, I initiated a friendly conversation. He is inclined to make repairs by himself. Therefore, I encouraged him and offered to help him via the phone at any time. That not withstanding, I reduced my fee for his satisfaction and he still continues with his idle rhetoric. My 40 year experience in the gas industry trained by PECO, and the 1 hour response time for the appointment ....made my day ... apparently not his. Which happens to be a milestone in the fireplace repair industry in this area. Stay safe and God bless."

Joe was extremely knowledgeable and was able to repair the fireplace within 1/2 hour. He also provided additional tips on care and maintenance. His rate was fair and he was able to schedule my repair within 24 hours of my call

I've never paid anybody else to do it; I guess it [his price] was fair. He fixed it, it was fine, I'd give him an A for that too. He came on time.

We found Mr. O'Neill on Angie's list. Unlike some other providers of these services, he was very prompt in returning calls and scheduled a service appointment for the day following my initial call. He came out promptly as scheduled and did an excellent job of clearing air from our gas line and preparing the fireplace for the upcoming season. I will certainly recommend him to friends.

After trying several other vendors who did not return my calls I expanded the search and found Mr Oneill. Called on Wednesday agreed an appointment time for Friday. Turned up on time and got straight to work to clean and service the unit. We did not discuss the price ahead of the service but given the professional and prompt service was fair.

I contacted several companies to service a Heat N Glo unit we have that has odor and in probable need of repair/service. One company was honest and said they do not service the brand I have so I specifically asked each company if this would be an issue. Mr. Oneil had told me on phone it would not be a problem and he can certainly work on them. I scheduled an appointment which I was happy it was the following day, although the conversation to schedule was very unclear on a time. When he showed up, Mr. Oneil immediately started taking apart the unit and said there are broken parts that he cannot fix (after dropping a few heavy parts on the floor). He said I would need to call a Heat N Glo dealer/repair company. He spent 15 minutes at my house, tore apart the fireplace, couldn't put it back correctly (left it apart even) and I thought it was over... Then he said it will be 85$... and quot;Diagnostic feeand quot; for telling me there are 2 parts that need fixing and the model number of my unit, which I can easily see myself. He claimed any dealer would be able to order the parts and not charge me their 85$ diagnostic fee... Wrong. I called 5 places, not one is able or willing to take his/someone elses word for it. I could end up with approximate 1,300$ charges for parts which must be paid up front is the closest I got. All would have waived the 85$ fee if they initially came out instead of mr. Oneil. Now the back up for someone to come out and start the process is an additional 3 weeks from when I originally was calling a few days ago (prior to, unfortunately, deciding to use Oneil). All of this could have been avoided if mr.oneil was honest about his abilities and service. My point is this: I specifically asked mr. oneil about being able to working this unit and was lied to, he was unable to do the work he claimed he could do, then he still expected and took my check... An honest worker would have done the right thing. I would highly recommend people use another service provider that can be more trusted.

"This fireplace business is seasonal work and all service providers are slammed between October and the end of the year. As noted the customer got a quick response and a accurate diagnosis. The industry is fraught with perils , as their are very few excellent service technicans working on all makes and models. I am probably the only provider that leaves an option for the customer to save money and order parts on their own, if they choose. Then if requested I will come back and install them. These D/V units costs between 5 and 10 thousand dollars to replace. I try my best to repair them when possible. I can't tell you how many companies will try to get the customer to replace these particular unit's for close to ten thousand dollars. When I leave this option the parts are not returned to original condition because they need to be replaced and thrown away. If this customer got back to me when the season slowed down , I would of continued to save him the exorbitant expense of most retailers to repair or replace his unit. The majority of consumers are not reading the owners manual and doing the regular maintenance required and can end up in unpredictable expensive repair/replace circumstances.Remember when another opinion comes in to service your product most will do the diagnostics and apply that fee to their repair. A small price to pay reaching out at a second opinion and conclusion to a untimely and expensive repair. To all the members, sorry it took so long for a response as I am just getting to see this customers predicament ."

We waited for 3 hours on a Saturday... No show.
Response from Oneill's Gas Fireplace Repair

"Very sorry about this service call. I had an emergency come up and was negligent in communications with the customer. To all reading this , please, if I am not at your property within a reasonable timeline, call me, and I will get back to you and give a current status on the call. I am a one man band and can get bombed with calls from the Tri -State area as the season changes. Most wait till there is a problem and omit the regular maintenance that is required for these units, that could be done off season. God bless, Joe O'Neill"

I called Joe yesterday. I was surprised that he picked up the phone right away.....Nice!!!
He said he would be available in a few days, but he called today--said he had an opening in the late afternoon. He came, fixed the problem and I'm happy, happy happy.
I might have given Joe a 'B' on the price, but since he responded within 24 hrs. all is good.

The technician was on time. Had to run out and get a part that he could not have known he would need. Came right back, stayed late and got the job done right. Took the extra time to explain the bill, and helped us with the operation of the unit. We will definitetly use them again.

See above. Lack of professionalism and bad attitude.
Response from Oneill's Gas Fireplace Repair

"I just happen to be looking today at my reviews and came across this one. Unfortunately I don't remember the circumstances on this one. The work experience that has accrued over the many years is a about forty in the gas industry, trained by the local utility. I've been in the main-line as well as evening calls into Chester, Pa.At 60 years of age I tend to be tolerant of most customers and reach out to them whenever I can, and go far beyond the average technician.I just have no response to Member, as my recollection to his demands may of been unreasonable. May God continue to bless you richly, Member Many blessings to you and yours."
