As I was standing at the service desk, the person behind the desk was on the telephone explaining to a customer that their car could use brake pads and rotors because of the rust on them... " probably due to the harsh winter." Having some experience on brake pad and rotor replacement as I have done all the brake repairs on all of my three cars for over 30 years, I never had rust on rotors under the pads once the brakes were applied a few times. So I was a little concerned that I may be missing something on my car's brakes. I left my car there and gave the service person two discount coupons and asked that they be applied where applicable.
However I was truly concerned when this service person called me later and told me the same story about my brakes! That although they passed inspection, the "harsh winter" may have rusted the rotors to the point they suggested pad and rotor replacement. They also suggested a tire rotation.
I had checked the car out myself before taking it in and knew that the almost new tires were wearing evenly and the brakes were fine, so I declined the brake work and tire rotation.
When I picked up the car I asked the service person, that since the car is garaged over the winter and never saw snow, (or rain)how could the rotors be rusted to the point of needing replacement. I was repeated the same " harsh winter" mantra. After reviewing my bill, I also noticed that a tire rotation was done! I was charged $15 for the declined tire rotation.. and given a discount of $13 for my coupons. I guess they were going to recover their coupon discount one way or another. I was so disgusted I didn't complain, but I should have. When I got the car home I pulled off a wheel and confirmed that there was no rust on the rotor. The last two oil changes they performed caused oil to drip on my garage floor because the technician didn't clean the frame after the oil filter was changed, I'm hoping this isn't going to happen again from this latest oil change.
I hope this dealership wasn't trying to boost service department sales by pushing expensive unjustified repairs.
