Once the weather was reasonable for concrete work in June, Morning Star provided a date that they would begin work on this project. The team arrived on the agreed-upon data and time as expected.
Day 1 consisted of placing protective 4 x 8 plywood sheets in the garage area under the porch in case of falling concrete, removing the front porch railings and columns, and installing temporary heavy duty supports for the existing porch roof.
Day 2 was demolition day and included demolition of the deck with jackhammers. A bobcat was used to carry the debris to the dump truck. Throughout the process, the team was extremely careful to not damage the front yard by using only the driveway and street. We had also asked that the team be aware that the new Hardie siding on the house had just been installed, so they were not to come in contact with the siding during the demolition. All went well...but this was a noisy day in the neighborhood!
Day 3 was spent finishing-off the demolition, as well as removal of the galvanized decking and debris. New heavy-gauge steel decking was installed and this was followed-up by forming the porch with lumber and supports to prepare for the concrete pour. All rebar was installed at this time. The decking was also braced with steel posts in the garage area, to ensure the decking would not bow under the weight of the concrete as it was poured.
Day 4 was concrete pumping day. Morning Star arrived at 7:00 sharp to finalize everything on the porch surface. The concrete pumper truck also arrived at this time to set-up shop on the street and to get the concrete boom in place. At 7:30, the concrete mixer truck arrived. By 8:00, the pour began and was completed within 40 minutes...all extremely organized. The concrete that was used was fiber mesh reinforced 4000 lb. Although the contract was for 6" depth, the final depth was 8" and was broom finished. The porch deck looks and feels like a commercial installation. Actually...it is.
Day 5 was used for final clean-up and application of a commercial concrete sealant.
Morning Star is a family owned and operated business. Kerry is a very down-to-earth person, honest person. He welcomes any suggestions and will be happy to do anything to make the customer happy. When I questioned how some of the work was being done, he explained to me that this is how he would do it if it were his house...nuff said!
My sister saw the deck for the first time today and said it looked fantastic!
We would readily recommend Morningstar to anyone.
"Dear [member name removed], I would like to apologize, on behalf of our company, for our lack of responsiveness in the aforementioned incident. I am not sure why Steve was late incoming out to your home, but let me assure you that it was a very isolated and uncommon thing to happen. As for actually getting you a quote on the work, or getting back in touch with you, again our apologies...with an explanation. As you may have gathered, MorningStar is a family owned and operated company. At the time we were dealing with you, we were also dealing with very pressing family matters. The owners wife, who is also the office manager, was undergoing a life and death struggle with a rare blood disease called TTP, as well as a brain aneurysm. Fortunately, after intensive treatment and surgery, she is now fine and things are going amazingly well. Unfortuantely, for a short time, there were a few things that fell through the cracks and did not get done. We are sorry that you were one of them. Of course, you had no way of knowing this, and we can understand your being upset. We hope you found someone who did a wonderful job for you and you are very happy with your new patio and steps."
"Believe it or not, this negative review was actually helpful to me and our company. My name is Kim and I am the woman who usually answers the calls for MorningStar. As many construction companies do, we often get more requests for estimates than we could possibly do. I take the calls and the owner, Kerry, chooses which potential jobs to look at. We are appreciative for every call that comes in and I am sure, that at times, I get a bit too optimistic on how much work that our crew can actually take on. I was fearful that I may put potential customers off by telling them we may or may not be able to look at their work. Therefore, at times, I did on the phone, what we as a company, never do on the job. .. overpromise and underdeliver. We are an excellent company and make a habit of giving our customers more than what they pay for. Thanks to this review, I have searched for and found the the right way (I certainly hope) to let callers know, when appropriate, that while we certainly appreciate their call to us, I will be passing along their information to the owner. If he feels that he can do their job for them in a timely manner, we will get back to them shortly. If it is apparent from the onset that their project is not a good fit for us at the time, I will politely make them aware of the fact in order for them to concentrate on finding someone who can better serve their needs. I sincerely apoligize for any inconvienence and I thank you for bringing this to our attention. Critisism, when it is just, and directed towards someone who actually cares, is a good learning tool. I appreciate the lesson and assure you, have learned from it."
We emailed back a few questions to be sure. He answered promptly. Called me at 7:30 Monday morning, asked me when I wanted to start. I told him when ever he was ready. He said he could do it today. I left a check in my door and when I came home the patio was dug out. Tuesday I came home and there was a beautiful patio and Tuesday at 6:00 Kerry called me to ask if I was happy and to remind me not to walk on it for a few days with high heels and that on Wednesday he would pick up the check and his supplies left at the site.
I called 11 men--only five answered my phone call in the last three weeks--Prompt reply and a great price the first time and good references won MoriningStar our business.
