We went through this company from our home buyers warranty. They were responsive and kind in our dealings but took advantage of homeowners who did not understand our HVAC system. Our heat was not working on one floor and they identified the problem as a zone control valve that needed to be replaced. This did not fall under our warranty so we paid out of pocket. The heat still did not work so they came back out and told me there was nothing they could find (the heat would warm up to about 63 degrees at times but not go any higher). Then a few weeks later our heat started making loud noises rattling through the house and a different emergency contractor came out and to our dismay we found THERE WAS NOT EVEN A VALVE REPLACED! And the main issue was there wasn't any water in the tank and it needed to be cleaned. American Team completely ripped us off and from seeing other reviews on here, this is a common theme for them. STAY AWAY.
The first three people did a terrible job. The last guy did good. First guy couldn't fix it. Second guy said they had to replace a coil and then cut it too short so that was leaking and then they didn't add a part and that caused more leaks. When I complained enough they sent the last guy out and he fixed it. I was without my AC for most of the summer. I dislike their responsiveness, they did a terrible job, cut it short and showed up without part. When they finally fixed it they fixed it with duct tape. When I complained again it took a few weeks to get the last guy out.
- Despite 2 visits by 2 different technicians, American Team was unable to properly diagnose the source of the problem.
- American Team tried to sell us a costly cleaning service that ultimately was unrelated to the true root cause of our problem.
- American Team failed to communicate with us as their technician described, leaving us waiting for several days for a response while our heating system continued to experience issues.
First Visit
American Team was dispatched by our Home Warranty company to service our furnace at the beginning of October. When we first attempted to heat the house, the fan would start but the furnace would not. During the visit, the technician was able to make a fix by cleaning out a line so that the furnace would start again. So far, so good!
Second Visit
After between one and two weeks, the furnace began having issues again. It would turn on and heat to temperature, then fail to come on for several hours at a time. A different technician was dispatched to evaluate the issue further. This visit did not go well.
First, the technician was unable to locate the description of the diagnostic code that the furnace was generating. He could not find the descriptions, usually kept somewhere on the unit itself (A technician from another company later showed me they were on one of the panels) nor could he look them up via his smartphone. He said that his office would have to order the manual. He also stated that he believed we needed the evaporator coil to be cleaned, that this would likely not be covered by the warranty, and that American Team would be sending us a letter outlining the cost of the repair and what steps needed to be taken.
After several days waiting for this letter, we called American Team to follow up. The first person who answered the phone said she would reach out to the technician for an update and call us back. After several more hours with no return phone call, we called again. The second person who answered the phone told us that American Team does not send out letters, the coil needed to be cleaned, and we could have it scheduled whenever we wanted. It would take several hours to complete and would not be covered by our home warranty.
After speaking with our Home Warranty, who told us that they would still cover our furnace even if another company performed the coil cleaning, we called around for a 2nd opinion. It turned out that the root cause was a failed controller board, and that there was no issue with the evaporator coil. Had we listened to American Team we would have bought an expensive cleaning service that we did not need, and we still would have issues with our furnace.
We contacted our homeowners warranty company, American Home Shield and they assigned American Team to check out and repair our broken attic fan. I was a little concerned about the company after reviewing some of the mixed reviews on Angie's list. However, we were very pleasantly surprised with our experience. We were contacted within a very short period of time by a very pleasant person who was sensitive to our need for an early morning appointment, which she arranged for the following day. The repair technician called ahead and was even early which worked out well for us. He went into our attic and discovered a burned out attic fan motor and told us we needed a new one, which he actually carried on his truck so he could replace it immediately. It took him about 15 minutes and we were all on our way. The total cost was $75.00 for the visit. We appreciated the service we received from American Team and would be glad if they were assigned to us again. We have had good luck with American Home Shield over a ten-year period and plan to keep our policy in force.
I received a call directly from Bud, the owner of the American Team who said that he would personally call the warranty co. explain the situation, and give them his recommendation for resolution to the problem. He called me back a few days later to let me know that because the system had been compromised by the hybrid refrigerant, he got the warranty co. to agree to replace my condenser or heat pump completely, replace the evaporation coil in my air handler and install the latest R410 refrigerant that is environmentally friendly and inexpensive to add in the future if the need should arise.
The old system was removed and new install completed in about 3 hours. The technicians were prompt, efficient and courteous.
I am grateful to owner Bud and AMERICAN TEAM for exceeding my expectations in resolving my HVAC problem. My heating system is finally operating properly, my energy costs are back to normal which has provided peace of mind and one happy client.
AMERICAN TEAM will be my HVAC contractor of choice in the future. I highly recommend that they be yours also.
