Taking the car in, I waited for the news. Around 10am I got a call from Bruce. He said the alternator was not working properly, but the battery appeared to be ok. He really explained what was going on and didn't try to 'up sell'. He also said the tensioner (for belt) was bad, which made sense hearing the whining and needed front stabilizer links (also made sense with loud rattle). Daughter had also been driving with Service Engine light on and complained of engine sluggishness. I talked to Bruce a good 5 minutes and he explained he would check into all the issues and get back to me. Later, Bruce called back and went over all the items. Which were critical (Alternator and front links) and which items could wait (major tune-up as car still had original wires and other items). I was on the phone with him a good 10 minutes as he went over things in detail and answered all my questions. He didn't try to rush me or push me into services I wasn't sure I needed. I've worked on cars before, so have some knowledge of needs and costs.. With all the work that had to be done that day he said the car would still be ready by 5pm. I was happy with that. At 4:15 I got a call from Bruce that car was done. When I picked the car up, Bruce went over, in detail, what Problems I had explained to him and what his remedy was (he even changed the oil -3000 miles overdue and put in a burnt out light bulb. He told me this earlier and I approved). He had written up a 4 page explanation of what he did and what we put on hold. I spent a good 20 minutes going over this with him. Again he took the time to explain everything, Give me time frames for having other needed work done (weather by him or someone else) and answered all my questions and concerns. $900 sounds like a lot of money but I've been through many installations of alternators, tensioners, links and have a idea of costs and the labor involved to change these parts, especially in a 4 Cylinder car. I was very pleased being kept in the loop, things clearly explained to me, not pushed into things, and not upselling unnecessary work. Bruce clearly could have sold me a new battery, but didn't, At this point the car runs great (still need other services) runs well, no belt whining and no rattles in front end
