"We greatly appreciate your comments here. We understand the importance of our customers and getting back to them quickly. Thanks again for the opportunity."
"We are sorry that we failed to meet your expectations. Requiring us to only be able to service your system on evenings and weekends provides several challenges and additional costs. We will fix any workmanship related issue at no cost during the life of the system. Systems were completely tested at each visit and the systems checked out with no problems found. We never heard of any issues on a plumbing inspection. We would have provided any adjustments to satisfy the inspector at no charge. Please call to discuss."

On Sunday, October 5, 2014 we found pipes connecting to the system to be frozen and completely covered with condensation. A technician came and added/removed refrigerant from the system to fix the issue until Monday, October 6, 2014 when another technician came - the entire day - and found there to be a faulty valve stem in the unit and causing problems.
Saturday, November 3, 2014 was another call out and the technician came because the inside thermostat temperature was set at 69 degrees Fahrenheit and the system was unable to keep up and the inside temperature was 64 degrees Fahrenheit. The technician was able to reset the way the system called for heat based on which zone of our two zone system was calling for heat. Because of our basement zone not "calling," the living area zone was not able to keep up. The technician fixed the problem.
Curious about the new system and costs, I checked the electric meter on Monday, December 29, 2014. The reading was almost 5,000 kwh more than the previous month. After contacting PPL (our electric provider) about the extreme electric usage, they told me an electrical inspection for the work by Vertex on September 30, 2014 had still not been completed! I contacted Vertex and they called to schedule an electrical inspection. The electrical inspection was completed January 9, 2015 - 3 months after the electrical work was done. Based on the extreme electric usage, I called Vertex and a technician came on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 and discovered a faulty TXV on the unit. A new TXV part was ordered and a technician came and replaced the part on Tuesday, January 6, 2015.
On Thursday, January 8, 2015 another technician came to check the system again because of near constant usage of auxilary heat - resulting in daily electric usage of about 200 kwh, about $20/day to heat the house!
We met with Vince Youndt, the president of Vertex Mechanical on Monday, January 12, 2015 at his office to discuss our unhappiness with the inefficiency and cost of our new system.
Mr. Youndt came to our house on Monday, January 19, 2015 and identified some possible reasons for the inefficiency - changing the registers to one with wider fin openings for better air flow, replacing some old gray flex-duct that had been used by our old air conditioning unit, and putting a large air return register in our kitchen ceiling directly below the unit to pull more air in from the conditioned house space instead of the large open space between the first floor drop ceiling and second story floor. This work was completed on January 22, 2015 and January 27, 2015.
The unit continued to run on auxiliary (electric) heat about 50% of the time. January, February and March electric bills were $514, $578 and $553 respectively with monthly electric usage of 4448 kwh, 4931 kwh and 4683 kwh. When emailing Mr. Youndt about these large bills he commented that we would still be paying about the same we paid for electric and oil last year. We installed the system to save money - NOT break even.
January 31, 2015, my husband insulated some older duct work and we contacted an insulation company. The man from the insulation company discovered duct work running from the unit - the cold air return - pulling air into the unit from unconditioned attic space above our second floor bedrooms. The duct work was not connected to anything, but there is a register about four feet from it. After contacting Vertex Mechanical about it, they told me it would cost about $400 to run the necessary duct work. My husband did if for $45.
February 10, 2015, we consulted another company. They came and tested the system and said it was working properly.
The insulation company did blown in insulation (R-38) above our family room, about our second floor bedrooms and on top of duct work inside knee walls running the length of the house. My husband completely insulated the remainder of the knee wall spaces to R-38. Finally our energy usage decreased to an average of 86 kwh/day, down from an average of 161 kwh/day. At no time did Vertex Mechanical discuss the need for more insulation in our home. It was not included in any estimate.
After waiting through the winter, our yard and driveway were landscaped on May 13, 2015, repairing damage from the drilling and digging. I began contacting Vertex Mechanical about the landscaping at the beginning of April. The landscaper identified an old underground heating oil tank that staff members of Vertex Mechanical told us was an old electrical point that had been cemented over. Thankfully this old, unknown oil tank was not damaged during any of the drilling and digging. We are now in contact with another contractor to have it removed.
We will not be using Vertex Mechanical for any service again and do not recommend them.
"To see a review like this is very painful. We definitely had issues on this project and most out of our control. We had a mechanical TXV failure within a month or two of switching over to heat, and had that changed out very quickly. We also offered some additional work for free to help offset the high energy bills that resulted from the TXV failure. System was sized in accordance with ACCA but the infiltration of the home was significantly more than we would have anticipated This is an older home and we found excessive infiltration values where significant amounts of outside air was leaking into the conditioned space. We also found significant duct leakage on the existing duct system which we did not install. So with that said, we made the recommendation to seal off ductwork better and hire an insulator to help seal off the outside air. We offered to do the duct sealing at cost and even discount from that a portion of the utility bill because of the TXV failure. They also took our advice on hiring an insulator to better insulate the home. This was the last time we heard from this customer which was months ago until this review showed up, which lead us to believe that a resolve was reached with the insulation and to their satisfaction. I would also have to admit that the subcontractor we use for yard reconstruction dropped the ball on them several times last fall because of it being so late in the season for reseeding, and then forgetting to put them on the schedule for this spring. Very unfortunate and we made the necessary corrections on this. We are a bit frustrated that we found out through a review that this customer was not satisfied. We make every effort, even when it is something out of our control, to meet the expectation of the customer, and never walk away from that, and do everything possible to avoid additional costs to the customer which is reflected here. We will be making contact with this customer to see if there is anything we can still do to better satisfy their needs. Vincent Youndt President"
Greg was very helpful in explaining exactly how they would accomplish the work and what would be involved.
I got a call the afternoon that the job was done, and everything looks and works great!
