Manicures/Nails
This was my first time ever getting gel nails myself, but I have several family members that get them done regularly, so I know how nice they are supposed to look. I went to this salon because of all the nail salons in the area, they advertise walk-ins welcome, and this was a spontaneous decision. I walked in and the (owner?) woman practically demanded to know what I wanted in a very abrupt manner. When I tried to explain that I had never had gel nails done before and wanted to know what my options were, she seemed resistant to discussion and just wanted me to decide and sit down (there was also a language barrier issue, so that may have compounded the problem). After deciding what I wanted, she went to work very quickly and, I thought, somewhat roughly. When she was gluing the tips on, she got so much extra glue everywhere that later when I got home I had to pick dried glue off my fingertips and ended up actually ripping my skin and bleeding in several spots. When she applied the actual gel coating, she did so very unevenly and did not adequately shape them. The underside of the nail tips have big chunks of excess product that dried and she never buffed out. The surface of my nails are noticeably uneven in spots. I explained to her that the reason I wanted my nails done in the first place is because I wanted them to look nice before a string of job interviews I had lined up, so I didn't want anything super colorful or sparkly. I decided that just a thin line of silver glitter polish, along the line where the white tip met the rest of the nail bed, would look fun but still professional enough for interviews. And she did an awful job applying the paint. I understand it was a thin line and might have taken extra attention to apply correctly, but at least check to make sure the line isn't crooked or blotchy (which it is both). Now, me being a first time gel nail buyer, I didn't look closely enough at them before I left the shop to notice all of these issues and ask for them to be fixed before I left - lesson learned! Also, there were several other women in the shop waiting for services, and she kept jumping back and forth between all of us, which left all of us at some point waiting impatiently. She appeared to be the only person working that day. It may be the case that I caught the shop short staffed that day, because it seems that a business owner would definitely need more than one employee if they expect regular walk ins, but in any event, I was frustrated and felt like I was being rushed out of the shop at the end of my visit. And then, just to top it all off, today (one week later), one of my nails completely ripped off (not doing any activities out of the ordinary - I was folding laundry!) So now I have to find a new salon and spend another $35 to get my nails redone so I can attend the rest of my job interviews with beautiful, professional-looking nails instead of the mess I got from this salon.
UPDATE: On 3/24/14 I wanted to go get my nails fixed ASAP because my next interview is tomorrow morning. The only other salon in town that does gel nails was unexpectedly closed, so I went back to Unique Nail Salon, intent on getting two of my nails fixed for free - the first nail came off last night, and a second nail came off this morning. The good news is that she was very sweet, put on two new nails, and even touched up the rest of my nails without me having to ask. And she didn't even ask for me to pay for it (I was planning on arguing if she had, but she didn't, which I appreciated). So now I have a full set of nails again and it didn't cost me any extra. But there were a couple of bad news issues, which is why I'm not changing their grade up from a C. I noticed today, which didn't seem to be a problem that last time I was in, that the room was very poorly ventilated. I don't know if a window that is usually open wasn't open, or if some sort of fan system wasn't working or if it was intentional, but after about 15 minutes in the room, I started to feel woozy from the chemical fumes. NOT a pleasant experience. Also, when she was attempting to remove the remainder of the broken nails, she didn't soak my fingers in acetone nail polish remover (which I read online is how you get them off), but instead used another nail tip and a little set of pliers and just ripped them off - which hurt! And again, I thought she was rather rushed with the polish - turned out kind of sloppy on one of the new nails. So, I'm just going to use the non-acetone stuff to get the polish off these and redone them tonight, and then I plan on going to a different salon in the future to get them filled. Nice woman, but I just don't think the quality of the work is good enough.
