We had been approached, cold call from a company that we had not heard of in the past and they were very pushy about coming to do the job of chimney seeping. We hadn't even thought of doing this at this time, however we thought it had been a while and maybe we needed to just get it done. My husband has a hard time saying no to anybody and when the person called he somewhat "folded" under the pressure they were imposing. Feeling a sense of uneasiness about this, I went on the internet and looked up "Anngie's list" and joined. When I looked up the company, I found that they had little or no experience in doing chimney sweeping, much less had any good recommendations for their services in general. I looked at the list of companies under the title "chimney sweeps and found the one we settled on - Chimney Technologies. They were immediatley responsive and so I called the other company and cancelled the appointment with them.

For the service they provided, I found their price fair. They gave us a thorough report.

From the outside, the job looked very straightforward. Slide the liner in and replace the interior fittings. Estimate was $1365. Compared to other estimates, this was a good price.

However, it turned out to be far more complex. Because the previous appliances (which replaced the original oil furnace from the 50's) were taller, the utility chimney had been re-routed through the wall with three 90 degree bends. Peter had to jack-hammer out the original flue opening to allow him to reach up and guide the flexible liner through the three bends and out to the hot water heater. This added about $500 to the job. That was an unwelcome shock, but he did explain the situation and offered us the choice of stopping work and terminating the job or paying more to complete the job. What was expected to be a 3 hour job, turned into a 6 hour (not counting lunch) job.

We decided to complete the work. The job was well executed. They bricked, mortared and re-plastered the chimney wall where they did the jack-hammering and cleaned up well. It looks better than when we bought the house, because the original flue opening is gone and the extra flue pipes for the furnace have been removed.

They were very pleasant and professional. I would definitely hire them again and can recommend them without reservation.

On time, pleasant, kept things neat and clean. Appeared to be efficient, explained work and inspection result clearly.
