I hired H&H in June of 2012 to replace my gravel farm lane with millings. Probably a total distance of around 600 linear feet or so. I thought they did a fine job back in 2012 and that cost about $7000. In 2014 my millings were washing away and ending up in some areas I mow. There were ruts and potholes after only 2 years. Scott Pentz, who is the only person I dealt with at H&H came and looked it over in 2014 and gave me an estimate for repairs. However, they never got to it in 2014, so I called Scott in September and told him to forget about it for now, as I thought the weather was getting a little too cool for laying millings. After this spring's rains in 2015, the driveway washed even more and I called Scott and he came out again and looked it over. He said that with the lay of the land they probably shouldn't have done millings in the first place, because millings wash out. He suggested that putting asphalt over the millings would permanently solve the problem. The estimate for that was about $8400. I had already put over $7000 in it. So I opted for the original repair quoted back in 2014. Here again they came late in the season in September 2015 and brought some millings on the back of a truck and just them spread around with a shovel. I did have them replace a culvert, which they did a good job on. They also made kind of a berm hump or rumble strip from millings to try to divert the water to keep more ruts from forming in the driveway. I think the bottom line is they didn't bring enough millings to complete the job. They used quite a bit topping up over culvert to level that out and by making the berm hump from millings that they decided to do make on the spur of the moment, I think they ran out of millings to completely patch the existing ruts and potholes in my driveway. They said they would be back to finish up and spread some oil or emulsifier on top. A couple of weeks later they came back but didn't bring any more millings. They spread the oil and then spread some finely ground stones, almost like course sand over the oil. It looked ok when they were finished, but I knew sand wouldn't last, since packed down millings washed away. So basically, for the ruts they didn't bring enough millings to fill on the first trip, they just leveled out with these finely ground stones to make it temporarily level. They are starting to wash away again already and it's only November!

I was very happy with the initial job they did in 2012 and even recommended them to two neighbors, but apparently they shouldn't have used millings in the first place. I wish Scott would have told me that the lay of the land wasn't suitable for a millings driveway. And in all fairness to Scott, maybe he didn't realize it in 2012 either, but my original need for new drive was because my gravel driveway kept washing away. And the millings really didn't solve that. So when I have to redo this driveway again, I don't think I'll be calling H&H.

Mike Hartman is the owner and he is just fantastic. He had his guys one right after another coming in with a load of dirt, because we were on a slope and we wanted to build it up. He worked it all out; he had five guys at all times. They would bring it up, dump it, get down, reload and come back again, until we got forty-loads so that our contractor could finish up at the back of the house. It was just fantastic. He came out and gave us an estimate on our driveway that we want to have done sometime as we get the landscaping done. We have a humongous driveway, like seventy-five feet back, plus a parking pad on it, he gave us an estimate of $8000, and it is going to be a double layered one. The dirt that he brought up was $12000 for forty-five loads of topsoil and fill dirt and he cut us a break there. His workers were really nice. They would always ask before they started whether contractor said anything about the area or if they could dump first. So they worked really well with the contractors. They just were super nice. Mike really gave us a good deal on the dirt.

I have a horse-shoe shaped driveway, and the one entrance is on a steep hill. Hand H had drive the asphalt roller on the street to do a loop because the hill was too steep for the roller to go back up it. This caused the roller to create a few white streaks on our driveway because the stone from our street got on the roller. I called Hand H and their project manager came to our house and did a light pressure wash to remove the streaks. Going the extra mile to do this is a sign of a good contractor.
