Services provided: Removal and replacement of siding, capping, trim, gutters, gutter guards, and downspouts. Reason for 2/5 stars: Ultimately the job was completed per the contract, but I am not happy with the quality of work or Joe's attitude while resolving issues. I do not recommend Kontz Construction. Notes: Kontz Construction subcontracts with Topline Siding and a gutter company whose name I did not catch. Contracts with Kontz Construction include a requirement for a "positive comment and 5 star review upon job completion to full satisfaction." Kontz was 1 of 5 companies we received estimates from. For all the work done I was quoted $17,550 which was not the cheapest quote, but I felt it was reasonable and Joe initially inspired confidence. That quote did not include residing the gables, but Joe was willing to add those in at no additional cost later on. Time from signing the contract to work starting was quick, only a few weeks. Problems: Channel drain in driveway was not covered and ended up filled with debris. Siding company had to be told three times to do a site cleanup and still did a poor job of it. Fiber optic internet box was carelessly removed which broke the FO cable requiring repair by Verizon. Exterior light was carelessly removed and broken. Other exterior lights were not properly wired when reinstalled. My (brand new) trash cans were used to move debris into dumpster and were broken. A bush was completely destroyed and inconvenient branches on trees were deliberately snapped off instead of pruned. The house wrap had many gaps and was left covering attic and dryer vents. Pieces of siding near the gable peaks were not properly secured and fell off. Misalignment of the siding caused a gap to open. They did not choose to use undersill/utility trim to secure the top row of siding causing it to become wavy as the nails through the bottom edge did not allow thermal movement. An additional issue (that isn't exactly anyone's fault) is that while the house initially had 5" gutters and new 5" gutters were installed, they are actually a bit too narrow given the broad, low-pitch roof on the house and with the type of gutter guards installed there is a lot of water that the gutters do not catch. My impression after speaking with the gutter company is that 6" is what SHOULD have been installed, but the contract was for 5". In my opinion this is simply an oversight. Results: Joe apologized for the lack of cleanup, took $550 off the final amount to compensate for damages, sent the siding company back out to reinstall the pieces that fell off and fix the gap and (after a lot of back and forth) properly install undersill trim to secure the top row of siding. The gutter company has checked the gutters and said that replacement with wider gutters is what's needed, but at this point I'm done dealing with Joe Kontz. While Joe was initially polite, professional, cordial, and seemed like a no BS type of guy, as soon as I had complaints about the quality of work and assorted issues he started speaking to me as if I'm stupid, implied that since I don't live in a "million dollar house" I shouldn't be complaining, tried to convince me that undersill trim is not industry standard, and in general had a really unpleasant, unprofessional attitude about resolving issues. While the contract was fulfilled, the experience was overall unpleasant and given the corners that I KNOW were cut I have serious misgivings about the overall quality and longevity of the siding installation. My experience may be a one-off, Kontz Construction has many positive reviews, but I will never contract with them again and certainly do not recommend them to anyone else.
