The insurance company balked at the price difference, but let me use Naugle after their adjuster walked through the house with Rich (the owner), who explained everything that had to be done, including why they couldn't use parts from (old) radiators to fix the radiators or just weld the broken pieces back on.
I'm so glad the insurance company let me use Naugle. I wasn't living in the house at the time, just using it on weekends, with the intention of moving in when I retired in mid-2014. So I had to trust the contractors to do what they needed to do without me watching over them all the time. Naugle didn't disappoint -- they were very professional and it was obvious when I'd come up for a weekend that good progress was being made. The workmen were always, always, always polite, professional, and personable, and it was obvious they knew what they were doing and did it well. They also treated my house with respect and were very patient when answering my questions. I really cannot say enough good things about them.
By the way, this really is a family-owned business - Rich is the son of the founder, and his son is one of the plumbers who worked on my house. These guys are really old-school when it comes to work ethics and knowing what they're doing.
For more specifics, read on...
The kitchen radiator that burst was a different type of radiator - it fit into a recess in the wall, but no one makes that type any more (it was impossible to clean behind it, as it was literally framed into the wall, so I'm glad they stopped making them!). But I didn't want the new radiator sticking out into the kitchen (it would have made it impossible to open a lower cabinet), so Rich called in the rep from the radiator manufacturer to consult on the best way to address the problem. The radiator they ended up putting in that spot fits just perfectly into the space left by the old radiator.
Unfortunately, as they removed sections of the walls to get to the broken pipes, they found that the stack (main sewage pipe for the house) had cracked, and -- and I really appreciate this -- they told the insurance adjuster that they felt that it was age, not freezing, that had cracked the stack (the house is 80+ years old). I think this is a great example of the ethical nature of this company.
The stack (cast iron, about 6" in diameter, running from the second floor all the way to the basement) must have been incredibly difficult to remove, but they did it without making huge holes in the walls or damaging anything when they took it out. And speaking of holes, they were very careful not to make the holes in the walls any bigger than absolutely necessary, even tho' it made it more difficult for them to remove the busted pipes and risers.
And when they removed the old radiators, they didn't scratch the floors or ding the walls, even while bringing three of them down from the second floor. And trust me, these things are incredibly heavy and awkward. Notably, the other contractor who gave me an estimate said they would be as careful as possible when they removed the radiators, but said "it's inevitable that the floors will be scratched and dinged" and they wouldn't take responsibility for fixing them. Mmmmm.
I was so pleased with (and frankly, amazed by) the work they did, I have recommended W.F. Naugle and Sons to my neighbors and friends, and even if the price is a bit higher than other contractors out there, if you want the job done right, it's definitely worth it to hire them.
Since we had the plumber out, we had him replace the cartridge in our leaking bathroom sink.
He was able to get to us quickly, the plumber who came out was efficient, cleaned up after himself and was friendly with our very friendly golden retriever.
