Being a total stranger to the auto service community in the Scranton area, I absolutely had to get new tires before
registering my car from out of state. I had just left my personal mechanic of 30 years behind, and knew no one here
who might deliver the kind of capabilities I desired. I found KELLEHER TIRE through Angie's List, and did the
following:
1. Perused their EXCELLENT website to compare available tires to the minimum necessary for my auto -- got an education on
tire vocabulary. Selected 3 alternatives that met the spec's, from a database of hundreds of makes/models/sizes.
2. Called Kelleher at 8:30 Friday AM -- their lines were busy. So I called STS Mt. Pocono and discussed their options-- it turned
out that my chosen tire was "not in stock" [it was a loss leader], but he would call his warehouse and call
me back "right away". That never happened, and neither did my business.
Re-called at 10:30, spoke to counter person, Bill. He was polite,
knowledgeable, was patient with my questions, and DID NOT TALK CONDESCENDINGLY TO ME! [I am a retired
engineer, not a mechanic -- but I'm used to learning how to purchase things...I like to be educated in what I'm buying, and
consider myself a "technical" purchaser on big-ticket items like car repairs]
My favored tire -- the ones I was already wearing -- were no longer available (they have been discontinued). The
replacements were either under, or over, the spec's and quality I wanted. He researched the alternatives, and came up with
a tire I hadn't noticed -- with better than manufacturer's spec's, and LESS EXPENSIVE than I had planned for!!
3. PRICING: all other websites advertised the "price per tire", but left it open to what the "installation service" would include and
the applicable taxes. When Bill's price struck me as too high, I asked him if that included installation -- his resounding "YES"
made the deal better than anything I had found (using Angie's List) from any other tire shop in the region. The quote
he gave me on the phone included EVERYTHING: installation & balancing, TPMS adjustment, tire rotation, plus taxes --
it was the BOTTOM LINE PRICE! When was the last time you got THAT on the phone from a perfect stranger?
4. SCHEDULING: Had he attempted to special order my original choice, I had the dangerous option of continuing on bald tires
until next week, probably Tuesday. Using the tires he had located, we were able to schedule TODAY at 3:00 PM. . . which
I made sure to honor.
5. In at 3 -- out at 4. Bill, and Larry Kelleher (3rd generation) were as polite, cheerful, knowledgeable, and competent, as
what I had hoped for. I value my long-term auto mechanics as "partners" in my well-being, and expect to be treated that way;
they did all this and more.
To me, this shop represents the ideal mix of Dedicated Professionals who know they aren't the "big guy", but value their repeat trade and aren't afraid to provide the kind of service that brings folks -- like me -- back for more.
