Real Estate Auctions
We moved from our house to an apartment after 40 years of marriage. After moving all we needed at the new place, we filled a large U-Haul truck with what was left - front to back, top to bottom. This included good antiques - furniture, quilts, vintage toys, lamps, chandeliers, silver pieces, pictures, many collectables, a great old wooden wagon and other really nice decorator and household goods.
After a month, Mr. Farmer sent me a check for only 22 items with only ticket stubs for a receipt. When I asked him about the rest of the truck load, he acted as though I were hounding him but he sent me another small check with NO accounting. At this point I sent him my list of the items I had given him. He told me that "he knew I was going to be trouble right from the start". It took about a month for him to look back in his records. When he returned the list (with a very tiny check) he indicated that many items were "no sale" when that was impossible and also that he sold a large group of quilts, tablecloths, sheets, towels, comforters, antique linens and beautiful pillows for $9.....$9??? When I further questioned him he got very ugly and said he knew I "would never be satisfied".
I was not questioning him about the prices he got, although as illustrated above, they were VERY low. I know that you run a risk whenever or wherever you auction something. What I was questioning him about was the fact that he did not pay me for everything he sold. Also he had NOTHING to back up his accounting, no receipts or print out.
His method of accounting felt very suspicious and was completely unprofessional. It also took 5 months to complete the transaction when everything was sold immediately.
I also want to say that every time I called him he had some excuse for not handling my account. He had to do a million new things and it seemed as though he had his money and that was all he cared about.
All in all it made me very sad because there are plenty of other auctioneers out there and I could have picked any one of them.
