2 shops nearby advertise their services heavily in the Reading area. I went to both and had zero success; both put the flash drive on machines that were "able to read anything if it is salvageable". Neither shop could get the drive to open up and pronounced the data as "lost".
My wife had taken a laptop that was malfunctioning regularly to Stereo Hospital after trying other shops and paying over $100 to each with no success. Mr. Smalser repaired the laptop two years ago and it is still running well today. After I struck with the other two shops, she said that I should try Stereo Hospital.
The flash drive did not read on machines that were similar to the other 2 shops. However, Mr. Smalser went a step further by asking if I minded if he tried to repair it by hand with a screwdriver. He tried a couple of adjustments to the USB connector then put the drive back in. It worked! He downloaded all of my data to a disc and the flash drive is still working; total cost to save 5 years worth of work was only $31.80.
Needless to say, I have followed his advice and backed up the data in 2 other locations.
