Upon completion of the repair work to my engine, I picked up my car from Croft's Service Center and drove it to where I was staying that night (aproximately 1.5 miles) . The next morning I attempted to drive my car to work and while in transit I had major engine trouble. I called Croft's Service Center and spoke to John Croft and explained the problem that I was having to him and he sent a tow truck to my place of employment to pickup my car and to take it back to Croft's Service Center. I received a call from John later that day at which time he told me that my engine was blown and that I would need a new engine.
After getting that bit of bad news, I sent AAA to Croft's to pick up my car to have it towed to a different garage so that they could look into what actualy happened. According to the second mechanic, Croft's did not repair my engine correctly which resulted in by engine blowing up. When the cam seal was originally removed, the mechanic at Croft's Service Center that did the original repair work should have been able to see that there were additional problems with the cam. (basically, there was ware on the cam and engine head, and because of that ware, the cam did not seat tightly and properly in the head of the engine.) When the Croft mechanic attached the new timing belt and applied the correct amount of tension to it, it caused the cam to tip very slightly and not be seated properly in the head of the engine. This should have been seen when the original repair work was done which would have meant replacing the engine head and not the whole engine which is what I have to do now. Mr. Croft has been contacted by me on numerous occaisions and by the second mechanic, and he refuses to take any responsibility for what happened to my engine. I have now been without a car for 6 weeks and have been forced to purchase a new vehicle which I can't really afford. The total cost for the botched repair job was $765.00 + about $65.00 towing expenses plus about $3,200 to have a new engine installed so that I can sell the car. The total cost to me will be about $4,030.00. The second mechanic even took the engine to Mr. Croft at his service center so that he could see first hand what happened. Mr. Croft's response was that the cam and engine head were bad and that it wasn't his fault and he would not refund any money or pay anything towards a new engine. When the original work was done, they should have been able to see that there were additional problems with the engine that needed to be addressed. Instead, they slapped the engine back together and didn't complete the work that needed to be done. (His poor workmanship ruined my engine but he's not responsible.) This doesn't make any sense to me. I need your help !! I am not a mechanic and I hope that all of the terminology is correct. I have provided this information to you to the best of my ability.
Response from CROFT'S SERVICE CENTER
"In response to Mr. (member name removed)'s commentary on his recent car repair it is only fair to mention that he omitted a very important fact that when the vehicle was driven onto our lot to be repaired it had no oil in the engine. We had to add 4 quarts of oil before we could even bring the car into the shop to diagnose the oil leak. Mr. (member name removed) was also informed at the time that because the car was driven without oil that there was no guarantee that there was no internal damage done to the engine. At the time of the repair the engine was not making any noises that would have indicated any internal damage, if we had heard any noise we would have certainly recommended a complete tear-down of the head to get to the root of the noise. It should be noted that at the time of the replacement of the seal an inspection of the area did not show any signs of damage."

I feel that they are very competent and honest. I have tried many local mechanics and Croft's is leaps and bounds better. You may have to wait a couple days and even a week for an appointment, but they do good work and get the job done and will tell you exactly what was done. Their prices are fair, not cheap, but worth the quality of work and I always see the same faces there each time I go. I highly recommend them and will continue to go there for all automotive needs.

They originally told us they couldn't squeeze us in until Monday (this was on a Wednesday) but if we were able to drop it off they would try to take a look at it before then. We didn't need the car and with all the great reviews we figured it was worth the wait. Well the got it looked at and fixed and returned to us by Friday!!

My experience with them was good, but I got the feeling that they could have done better. The mechanics seemed pretty professional, and they explained what was wrong with my car. The only complaint I had was that after the job was done, I did not get a call from them. I had to follow up and make sure that the job was done and go and pick up my car. I probably was a little too early in calling them; I probably called them before they could call me. Other than this glitch, the work was good overall. Everything is holding up pretty well. Their price was reasonable. I would use them again in the future if necessary.

Employees were personable upon arrival, and were able to look at and service my car in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon with no more than a few minutes notice. They were straightforward about the condition of my tires, brakes, and alignment, and said my car probably did not need to be aligned. I could imagine some other places may have differed just to get me to pay more for some service. They also advised me with how to move forward on repairing my washer pump, even though I could not come back to their shop to get the repair when the part would have come in. They were courteous and speedy in their efforts.

they are very courteous and since they do not have a lot of overhead expenses with fancy waiting rooms, the price is reasonable and the staff courteous.

The service was great and the price was much lower than expected. In addition, there was no shady "upselling" or warnings of imminent disaster.

My car was stalling at stop signs and red lights. I had it to another mechanic 3 times and it was never fixed. I called and made an appointment with Croft and they fixed it the same day for $35.00 Are you kidding me.............I hardly ever paid less than $90 or $100 for a repair. It was a simple fix and he knew just what to look for. My car has been running great all summer so I didn't turn it in for "cash for clunkers".

I like that they have free estimates. They give you the choice if you want to bring in your own parts or getting them from Croft's. They don't try to sell you things that you don't need. They are honest and do the work quickly.
