On Sunday the 10th, I noticed some water coming into my basement at an impressive rate. Since we moved in October 2014, this had happened a few times with heavy rain, but nothing to this magnitude - it was literally pushing holes in the hydraulic cement i had patched in a few places.
There was a sudden cold snap on the 10th as well, went from nearly 50 degrees the day before, to about 0 degrees in a day - and that was coupled with about a half inch of rain - so I just immediately thought I needed a drain. On the off chance it was a water line, I called my borough and asked them to come and check to make sure that this wasn't the case.
The borough didn't call me back until Monday morning, after which I spent most of the night trying to abate the leaking to no avail. The water company professional told me that he didn't think that it would be a water line, or backed storm drain, because the water lines were new, and there are no storm drains on our street. He also mentioned that with the recent snowfall, that they would have to wait to check the line until there was a dry day and a decrease in traffic to be able to hear if there was a leak.
So, based on that information, I surrendered to the fact that I would most likely need an internal french drain. I called several places, and even a general contractor, all of whom didn't have immediate response times.
This is important, because of what my wife and I had to do whilst waiting for an eval and price we could afford - this was building a levy in my basement to contain the water, using flow dams to try to direct it to drains, and every towel, blanket and sheet in the house needed to be spun out in the washer, and about 30 gallons of water vacuumed out and dumped every 6 hrs, for 7 days, so it didn't completely destroy my basement. We entertained all offers, none were great, but we were going to have to do something soon.
Then, on Thursday night, I noticed that around my curb box for the water service line had no snow, neither did my hillside, and it was very soggy. So I took pictures, and sent them to the borough manager, asking for someone to come and check the line. Move to Friday Morning, the water authority gentleman who came up three times over the next few days, was such a nice man, and he very nicely told us what the problem was, and what we needed to do to get it fixed. I called in every person I knew, even my uncle who was a retired plumber for suggestions, no one had a good one, so I turned to Angie's List, and good thing I did.
When I called Terry's plumbing, they were delightful, and Terry himself came out and took a look at what needed to be done. He gave me an amazing quote within my budget, and said that they would be back on Monday. Terry was the absolute best, he was respectful, honorable, and stood behind everything he said to me. The crew that Terry send must be his "A-Team" because Jason, Jason and Tim were top shelf. They put me at ease about everything, and got everything taken care of and the water back on within just a few hours of being here the first day. They came back day 2 to straighten up the yard, and patch a hole in my basement floor where the new line came in. The whole Job went off without a hitch, other than it being about 6 degrees outside the whole time.
They cleaned up everything very nicely, and gave me all the information I would need to keep myself safe going forward, and even let me know that my water tank is aging and we might want to budget for that next before it goes. Very professional, very good expert work and advice. I will use Terry's Plumbing again, and will recommend them to everyone I know. This was my first big hurdle as a homeowner, and Terry's made it easier for me. Can't thank them enough.
The major issue was he made the copper pipe for the tub faucet the wrong length, so it was impossible to actually connect the tub faucet to the copper pipe. It was short by almost a full inch. I did not notice that issue until after he left. Once the weekend came around, I began to work on installing the backerboard onto the wall studs as it sat on the lip of the tub (which is the only place to install backerboard), I then noticed how short the copper pipe was for the tub faucet was. I called the office for Terry's Plumbing. At first they tried to blow me off and wouldn't admit to any wrong.
After some persistence on my end, they did send the plumber back out later that same day on a Saturday. Overall I respected the way the office handled the situation, but they sent the same guy out who still couldn't get it correct. On the 2nd trip, he made the pipe for the tub faucet too long which left about a 1/2 inch gap. Instead of working to make it correct, he told me there was no way to make it the correct length, and that I would just have to put caulking between the huge gap between the tub faucet piece and the tile. I thought he was crazy because that is where all the water splashes during a normal shower and the gap was huge. Nevertheless, the plumber left without fixing the problem.
I told my new neighbor about it, and he was able to adjust the fitting on the copper pipe so the faucet was even with wall IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES and he had minimal experience just tinkering around his house. This "professional" couldn't get it right in 2 trips. I THINK THE COMPANY SHOULD HAVE GIVEN ME A REFUND because they couldn't complete the work as requested, although my amateur neighbor fixed it easily. INCOMPETENCE.
Terry was here for a problem over a year ago and I know that I will only call Terry or Rick from Terry's Plumbing for any plumbing problems that may arise. in the future.
-The fundamentals seem sound: they fixed the problem, as far as I can tell thus far.
-The plumbers replaced the pipe from the basement into the first floor, and installed a port into the pipe at the same time which I appreciated. After occluding the pipe with debris from the pipe removal, they also snaked the sewer drain.
-they were prompt in returning my calls, and I was easily able to schedule the next day. I got a phone call one hour before the plumbers arrived.
-the plumbers were courteous and helpful in answering questions that I asked.
Cons:
-they were very messy. Because they had to cut into my first floor wall to remove some of the pipe, there was going to be a lot of dust on the first floor. They said they would use dropclothes to mitigate the mess, and then they did not. I tried to cover things as they worked instead.
- Small point but weird: After going through the garage and back door to bring in equipment, they left it open for the remainder of the day- presumably for ventilation. Then, at the end of they day, the specifically said to me, "we've closed up downstairs," but when I went downstairs both the garage and door were wide open. Why say you closed up?
-Obviously, they also walked all over the house in dirty shoes, but that's a normal part of house work.
-the cost was high, and was not explained to me.
-the installed pipes are slightly crooked.
Kathy, their phone scheduler, was friendly and pleasant. She put Terry on the line and he said he would be out first thing in the morning to look at it. Terry came as promised on a Saturday morning and reviewed the various options, recommending that the line be replaced. He said they would use a method in which the "pull" the new line through by attaching it to the old line and pulling it out through the street, rather than having to dig up our entire basement and garage. He did caution us that it was not without risk, but that they do it often and that it works well. We agreed to the work.
After a day delay because the water company had to first come and repair the street valve that was found to be not working, Terry's four man crew arrived the next morning and successfully pulled out the old line, putting the new line in place. We watched them work the whole time and the whole process was quite impressive. The backhoe operator, Rege, used amazing precision to carefully pull the line out, which was about 75 feet long I'd guess. The crew spent about 7 hours on site and cleaned up the job site spotlessly when done.
We were so thankful that this procedure worked and that we did not have to dig up inside. Plus, Terry really spent time with us making sure we understood the options, pros and cons, and generally reassuring us that his team would take care of the problem and not to worry. He made numerous calls to me throughout the weekend to help coordinate and advise on the water company involvement and logistics that were needed. In a nutshell these are good people.
I will use Terry for all my plumbing needs without a doubt.
