We also used them to weed our flower beds. We just bought the house last summer and the
beds were overrun with weeds. They made fast work of it, especially considering how bad they were. This year we have them scheduled to clean out all of the beds and put down mulch. I'm looking forward to seeing everything neat and clean. It feels like they have a big enough crew that they can respond pretty quickly in spite of weather issues.
After a lot of back and forth we finally got a contract signed, and then I realized that if we were going to get a permit (which we're required to do by Pittsburgh building code), they wanted us to get it ourselves. It was a huge hassle and involved hiring an independent engineer to do drawings, multiple trips to the building office, etc. When I asked if they might do the application process for us, I never got a response to the question.
We finally got the permit, and work started. Day 1 they realized that the wall was far more substantial than they initially suspected. They had to stop work for a day to get an additional piece of equipment that could tear down the wall. Then after they resumed work they told us they could only do half of the wall because the wall shared a property line with our neighbor's structurally questionable garage. They either needed to bulldoze the garage, get our neighbors to sign a liability waiver, or they could only do the part that didn't border the garage. At this point my husband got really angry and said that this should have been figured out before we signed a contract with them or started the project. We ended up not being able to get our neighbors to agree and had to just cut the project down to half of the wall.
The initial projection for the whole wall was 8-10 days, and doing half the wall ending up taking about that time. We had made it clear that we would be leaving for vacation on a certain date and that everything needed to be finished before we left or we wouldn't pay the balance. We got the final invoice on Saturday with a note that if it wasn't paid in a week we would get a 10% surcharge, and were leaving Monday. Meanwhile our yard still had one of their tarps, several pieces of rebar and other large pieces of metal. I had to email multiple times and finally call while we were sitting in Charlotte on a layover flight. They ended up having to take pictures of the cleanup so that I could pay by credit card while I was out of the country.
As a rundown, the work quality was excellent. We're really happy with the final product, but the customer service left something to be desired. I will say that Mark agreed to extend a coupon for 15% off work done in March or April to our project in May because of how long it took to get a final estimate, sign the contract and get the permits which we definitely appreciated. The cleanup was terrible and we're still finding pieces of scrap and geogrid that were left behind in the weeds on the hill. If they had done some more advance planning, handled the permitting and had done a good cleanup job I would have given them a B or possibly even an A, but these issues got them the C rating.
We would probably still use them on another project, but only if the expectations were made crystal clear from the beginning. If you use them make sure everything is spelled out in your contract and do a final review before you settle the account to make sure everything is how it's supposed to be.
I was surprised when they were gone by 4pm. On Wed, 3 guys arrived at 9am and started the
rebuild, in the early afternoon, it seemed they were rushed as 6 guys
were now working on my wall. So here is my summary.
Everything up-front was very professional and what was expected, and
even though I am mostly happy with the work done, there were a few
disappointments.....
1. Never do add-on's with-out a written estimate
on costs. With this I knew after everything was back filled I wanted
top soil brought in so that I could replant grass. I was verbally
quoted $70ton installed. I requested 2 ton and what I got billed was
$240. Which comes no-where near that quote even if they added a deliver charge.
2. I told Mark, how high I expected my wall to be and was
willing to pay extra for more block to bring it up to that height. This
never happened. And I will now have to go buy 12-15 more block to finish,
3. Always ask if there are coupons!! Angies list
doesnt do a good job of alerting customers if discounts are available.
SteelCity ONLY does if you go to their website as a 5% and 10% discount, BUT ONLY if presented at time of estimate. This makes me wonder if they raise the price by x% to just show you a discount. I didn't get any savings.
A few other notes: I perform many home improvement projects myself, but in some cases I don't have the time, equipment or skills required. Being that I travel for my work, so I was only around my house on Wed for 80% of the rebuild, I did not see the final results until 2 weeks later and was already billed. I did sent an email back and got a not so accommodating response. I am not a big complainer and seem to always learn lessons afterwards.
There was not a "maybe" box for would I use this company again and that's based on factors above. I do think they did a great job of rebuilding my wall and it did come with a 5yr warranty on construction. With any contractor watching the results as they go and making comments will get better expected results and in my case was unable due so because of my job .
"In regards to the above mentioned complaint, I corresponded via email several times with the member, regarding her request for a fall cleanup. I have attached said emails for your review. Never did I state that the fall cleanup would take only two hours. The fall cleanup agreement that is also attached clearly outlines our procedures for the fall cleanup service, stating that we charge $45 per man hour and $125 per dump load. This agreement was signed by the customer. In the earlier mentioned emails I was courteous and respectful towards the customer. I initially gave her a general idea of when they would be coming, but never said that I would give her an exact scheduled date. I told her we don’t generally give advanced notice for cleanups. In order to accommodate the customer, I asked her when she would like us to come, and she requested December 19th, 2012. I informed her via email that our workers, all of them were regular employees of our company, and were not what one might refer to as “trainees”. We verified with the crew leader, that all of the workers were working hard, and only one worker left each time the truck left the site to dump the leaves. Our workers were doing the work in a timely manner, and in no way were trying to “stretch it out for a full day”. Despite the fact that we felt that we were not in the wrong, we did try to appease the customer by reducing the charges by $147.50. Please see the attached invoice. This agreement to reduce the charges was reached between the general manager of our company, Casey Purcell and the husband of the customer, via a phone conversation on December 20th 2012. We felt that this was more than generous, and the customer agreed to pay the invoice. In our opinion, this matter has already been resolved between our company and the customer. Thank you. Sincerely, Carol Rhodes"
