South Hills Builders and Allan Bondy put a roof on our contemporary flat-roofed house 6 years ago and did a great job. The reason I am writing this now is to comment on their continued customer service after the fact. Flat roofs are hard to maintain and take a beating from the elements. Allan has always responded to my calls and concerns and when needed has come back to inspect and spot treat if needed. Not once was there any cost. They are a very trustworthy roofer in Pittsburgh.

Overall I was satisfied. They did a very good job. They did damage a strainer that goes into the gutter and they eliminated one, but when I called them, they came out promptly and took care of it for me.

Although it took some time for the company to respond to telephone calls once they did they came out and quickly looked at the roof and fixed it. I called them again in January 2011 as the roof was leaking in a similar place and a couple of guys showed up, looked at the roof and left. After over a week of unreturned calls to see what they found I have moved on to other companies. An architect friend came over to see what was happening with the roof and he determined that there was a missing end cap at the gutter against the house - which you would think that South Hills Roofing would have noticed when they were up there last year.

The work was OK, but it took them nearly three months to do the job. This was an issue as I needed to paint once they completed work. I signed the contract with them when it was 80 degrees outside, and they completed the job when the temperature was 20 degrees.

I had used this company for another small job in August and was completely satisfied with the experience. I called and was told that someone would be out in one or two days to prepare an estimate. They arrived, looked at the job, invested about 45 minutes of their time to repair the siding and then said "No charge - just remember us next time". They wouldn't even let me buy lunch. I certainly am not looking for a major roofing repair or siding replacement project - but with a 65 y/o house you never can tell. I surely will remember South Hills Builders when the time comes.

Overall, we were pretty satisfied with the service. However, we were informed that there would be a final walk through, and this never happened. They never followed up with us to be sure we were satisfied.

The crews work fast...almost too fast ... owner/manager is not not a worker.. Roofing, facsia boards, and downspouting was satisfactory. The leaks I was attempting to stop, did not completely go away. That's the nature of victorian homes though. One chimney was repointed by "swabbing", which resulted in poor work and appearance. The rebuilt chimney is fine; that craftman was good. The caps required my own extensive later strengthening and tighening of fastening system to the chimneys. I am a dyi, and decided I could fix it better myself. I would recommend them for simple roofs, fascia work, and downspouts. That work was satisfactory. I finish with this qualifying statement: There are few roofers out there that I trust. The good ones, the owner usually is on the roof and is the boss. But, they are expensive, and many times slow. I know what I can ask of this company, and would consider them for that work in the future.

This was a small repair job that fell right in the middle of busy season for siding/roofing firms. I had been disappointed by another firm that I had used a few times previously, but who left the job unfinished after multiple visits and 4 months. I received a final call from them saying "they just wouldn't be able to do the job." I contacted South Hills Builders via their link on Angie's List website. Although the job was small and I was not a prior customer, I received a call and a visit the same day to develop the estimate. I received the estimate two days later, accepted it and the job was scheduled. The work was done by John and Terry in a professional manner. They made a special trip to get caulking to match the existing color. I will definitely recommend South Hills Builders to others and contact them for any work I have in the future.

They put the gutter back, but the leak came back a few months later. Also, they never cleaned out the gutters in the back of my house, despite claims otherwise. Still, they were fast and the price was very cheap. Besides, leaks can be hard to find. So I decided to give them another chance. Well, that was a huge mistake. Called on Monday to see if someone could come out and look at the leak. They said they'd be there on Tuesday. When 2 o'clock on Tuesday rolled around I called and asked when someone would be showing up, the woman on the phone said Wednesday. 2 o'clock Wednesday rolls around and I call back. A very rude man, who I assume was a supervisor or owner, told me someone would try to come out today. I had the gall to ask when, because I want to be here when they are, and he said, "well, I'll have them call you an hour beforehand, is that good enough for you?" in a very condescending tone. It didn't manner anyways, because the guy didn't come. I called back at five and got the same rude individual. I asked when this mystical person was coming, and he said "tomorrow." I told him not to bother, because if they couldn't get it together for the past two days, why would they tomorrow? He said he was trying his best, and that he has a hard time keeping track of his people. What a pathetic excuse. Do you want someone who can't even keep track of his own employees working on your roof? I sure don't!

There is nothing that I liked or disliked about them. It was just a good experience.

This company gave us an estimate for repair and patching of our box gutters. As it was just after the ice dams and snow they were so backed up that we scheduled the work for early June. Our gutters were leaking into the walls causing plaster ceilings to fall in. They scraped and patched holes in our box gutters and painted our back porch roof. They also put a new rubber liner on the front porch roof. We are leak free now.

Like many people this winter, the gutters on one side of my 2 story home were pulled down by the snow. Knowing how busy roofers were, I waited until spring to make repairs. Even by June it was difficult to get a phone call returned and no one was interested in giving me just an estimate, although I live within 2 miles of several roofers. Welte Roofing told me that they'd send 2 guys and the first hour was $200 and each subsequent hour was $175. I was afraid of what could happen if there were complications so I said no. South Hlls Builders called me back and said they come out on my day off and would have the necessary materials with them if I decided to go ahead. Well, they came my next day off, which was fine. Looked at the job and said $600. I was floored. I never imagined that the work would exceed the deductable on my homeowners insurance. They also agreed to remove an old TV antenna - as a courtesy. I was afraind to send them away since I didn't know if or when I could get someone else to come out. I thought about Welte's offer and didn't know what the materials would add. So I said - go ahead. Even with some repair to the fascia board and putting up and taking down the scaffolding and removing the antenna they were done in 3 hours. I said I would use them again, but only on a job where I had plenty of estimates. After letting this sit for months, I should have just let it sit some more! Some recent big rains had added to the dampness of my already damp basement, and I was hoping this that lack of a gutter had been causing the trouble. But it really hasn't made that much of a difference. The guys were nice. I mentioned that I'd joined Angie's List specifically to find a roofer, but that didn't make any impression.

They were fairly quick in giving me a quote. Their quote was about $1000 higher than the other company that I ended up using. I didn?t have any issues with them, though.

Very well, professional. My only complaint was they didnt' tell us when the work was scheduled to be done; we had wanted to meet with them before it was installed to discuss other leak options.

They got us an estimate very quickly and performed the work quickly once we approved their bid

It couldn't have gone better! Allan arrived on time with an assistant named John and gave us a very fair estimate right there on the spot. John offered us very good advice regarding our gutters and the slope of our roof that we could have used no matter who we hired to perform the work. My husband and I were both impressed and put at ease by their level of experience and clear expertise. Within a weeks time we had a crew of six men on our roof making short work of a hot and dirty job. They did a lovely job - even better looking than we'd hoped for and cleaned up every bit of debris. Everyone was polite, friendly and professional. We were kept up to date every day, given great advice, and on the days that it rained the men made sure the roof was well covered. What's more the whole crew was kind and considerate to our old dog. Even though it's not part of the job, that meant a lot to us. We couldn't be happier with the work that was done!
