This crew was so hard working and careful. We were impressed by their sense of urgency that we needed to get things done before bad weather hits. They were blowing snow off the roof to continue working on Sunday morning. We took out cookies and hot cocoa for them to warm them up. Nice guys. During the week when they could not work, someone showed up in the morning and laid a tarp over a part of the roof that already had the felt but no shingles. They probably didn't have to do that, but they did.
Steve from Paff has been really good about keeping the communication going the whole time and has responded to every question or concern we have had.
Although they were the most expensive, we felt it was worth it to get a professional job done. And they were very upfront about the fact that they probably are the most expensive company out there. I don't care about that. We could have paid less and gotten much less in the way of workmanship from another company.
Thumbs up!
I got several quotes before I got this work done. I found their quote to be in the middle of the 4 that I received, with the two higher quotes having contractors who said they would use copper.
In all cases, the contractors described the work on my box gutter, which is an extremely high and long gutter (50' in length and 2.5 stories up) as a good sized job that would take a week and a half to two weeks. This was also true of Paff, though in their case, it was an estimator who gave that number, not the owner or a job foreman.
I went through a detailed discussion with the estimator that included his view of why the price was $ 5,000 - that there was alot of work, particularly in removing and being careful with the heavy spanish tile on my roof - it is very old and care with it was paramount.
Net of the work done: After a long story to tell me why the job would take two weeks, after signing a contract with them, they got it all done in a day and a half. I wne back to one of the owners, David Wisniewski to find out what was different and why it was so much quicker, and also to say - if you got it done that quickly, it means the job was less complex, knock some dollars off.
In the end, David told me it was a fixed bid contract and I was out of luck. I mentioned a vent that was cut into the roof - that was an add on we had done when they were working on the tin - he did throw that effort in for free.
I have two issues: I was "baited and switched" by Paff contractors at the time of the bid - if they'd told me it would take two to three days when hey gave me the quote, I could've determined if that was a fair price for their effort. They did not, and I believe their estimator told me a story about the jobs complexity .
2nd - their are several items related to the downspouts that have caused concern. My prior downspouts were custom copper, and very old. I elected not to pay for copper, and understood that aluminum was different. But when they attached them, they did not adjust or finish from the holes where the old box gutters were to the size of the smaller Aluminum downspouts. As a result, there are large gaps into the bottom of my box gutters, and I now have two bird families nesting there, one on each side. Shoddy work !!!! Last, the right side downspout has come apart repeatedly, multiple times at a few angles that are on the bottom to get the water to run away from the house.
And then, after being unhappy with Paff and the work they did, and having communicated that to their ownership, I had a downspout fall off in the ice last winter. The part that fell was well under the 30 inch overhang from the edge of my roof, so it may have been from weight, or ice in the downspout, but with a newly installed downspout, should it have fallen in the first batch of weather ? I don't know, but as protected as my downspouts are because of the overhang, I did not think so. I waited for the ice to melt a bit, then called to complain. I asked for the owner to call me.
My intent was to ask them to come fix this on their dime. Instead of calling me, when I got home that night, it was repaired. So l thought, "ok, great, they're doing the right thing." Then I got a bill for $ 70.00. LET ME BE CLEAR: if they had not agreed to come fix it, I would've hired a different company to do so - I already felt badly enough about what Paff Contractors had given me !!!
So I called to speak to the owner, and David did not return my call. I got another bill and called again with no call back.
Ultimately, after me ignoring the bill and them ignoring my couple of calls, they sued me in August at the magistrate's office for the $ 70. plus $ 6.15 in late fees.
I took an hour and a half out of my life last Wednesday, September 21, 2011, between drive time - 20 minute wait for the magistrate and 7 minutes of discussion in front of the magistrate. For me to ask the question "How do I get a bill and am sued for that bill when I did not ask for the service ? But rather, I called to complain." The hearing ended in a ridiculous moment when Paff Contractor President, Tom Paff, called after me as I was leaving, "I'm sorry for your inconvenience " (or some phrase like that. I wish I had written it down, as it was so COMPLETELY MISPLACED against the backdrop of the the fact that PAFF CONTRACTORS is a company that does not care one whit about customer satisfaction.
Verdict - found for Paff. split the dollars down the middle - $ 35,00 judgement. PLUS $ 77.00 to cover their costs.
So I overpaid for work I agreed for them to do in 2009, and I am mailing Paff Contractors another check for $ 112.00 dollars today for work I never agreed for them to do, and they will get their check and I will never do business with them again.
I would advise against anyone else doing so either. If you are going to - do yourself a favor - read the fine print and ask alot of questions.
