All debris was cleaned from the driveway and work areas.
Earlier in the day, Carlos told me that he would give me a $100 discount if I paid him all in cash. I had no problem doing that. At the end of the day around 5:00 pm, as it was getting dark, Carlos and his crew stopped working and he came to me and gave me a bill for $2,800 less a discount of $100, which I paid him in cash. As they were leaving, I asked Carlos what I was supposed to do about the big pile of sawdust in the middle of my front lawn. He said that he left it there rather than leave a big hole in my front yard where the tree used to be and that the sawdust would settle down and eventually the yard would be somewhat level again. Carlos and his crew then left.
Here we are a little over a month later, and the sawdust pile has not settled at all even with the snow and rain we've had. Needless to say, my front yard looks awful. I was pleased that they came on time, cut the tree down as I requested, but I was dissappointed that they did not remove any of the surface roots in my lawn that I really wanted them to do and would pay extra for. I feel like as soon as it became dark, they were done. It would have been nice for them to make an effort to come back out another day to cut out the surface roots. At least Carlos didn't charge me for that, but now I am going to have to find someone else out to come out and cut out the surface roots and remove the majority of that sawdust. Although previous reviewers mentioned that Carlos and his crew left the area clean when they were done, unfortunately, I was not pleased with the way mine was left. They left my lawn ornaments piled on my front porch and they did not clean the front lawn area of all the twigs, etc. Because I had minor surgery that morning on my hands, I could not put my lawn ornaments back or remove the twigs for a couple of weeks. As I'm trying to sell my house, having the front yard look the way it does does not sit well with potential buyers.
Bottom line: I was happy with the work they did, the accommodation they afforded me with respect to rescheduling due to my surgery, the fact that they came on time and worked hard to complete what they did in one day, but I would have liked to have had them remove the surface roots that I was willing to pay for and to clean up a little bit better in the yard.
"the customer and i agreed that the surface roots were not done. i asked her if she wanted me to go back and finish and she said no. she seemed to be content with not spending the extra money at that point. for me to finish the surface roots would of taken less than 20 min. i would not of left her unhappy over an extra 20minutes! and had she called me back i would of readily gone back and appease her. it seems that customers feel some sort of obligation to find a way to mention something negative. her contract was fully executed and any discontent from her would of been better served by calling me and discussing it rather than posting it on angies list with no resolve!"
"this was another example of our competitive pricing and high level of customer service we strive to maintain. Carlos/owner."
His crew showed up a day earlier than expected, and did the work very quickly. They probably had the entire job done in 30 minutes, which was very impressive. They did exactly what I asked for, and I have no complaints.
"This is an example of how most of jobs transpire from start to finish. I will come give you a written estimate then once the price is agreed on we promptly schedule your work. Thanks for your valued review of our services!"
An enormous, 100-year-old maple tree in my backyard was dying and needed to come down. Several huge limbs had already fallen off (a little over half of the tree was left standing), creating a potential danger to me and my neighbors / their pets. Knowing that it would cost a fortune to remove the stump totally, I asked for an estimate that would leave only the stump, which I figured I could cover with ivy or put some pots on. Carlos wrote me out an estimate for $1,100 to have the tree taken to 6-8 feet. This was a bigger stump than I had hoped to leave, as the tree is on a hill and is visible to everyone on my side of the block, so I decided to get more estimates. Carlos called a week later to lower the price to $900 since he would be in the area, so I decided to take the inexpensive offer. His crew didn't show up on the day scheduled because the job before mine had gone long. I understood completely and had no problem having them come the next day.
During the tree removal the next day, I received a phone call that my (usually very friendly and accommodating) neighbor was threatening to call the police because they had piled much of the wood in his yard, for some reason thinking it would make no difference. They then had to move the huge logs over the fence to my property, something that Carlos complained about later and likely contributed to his leaving the job incomplete. When I returned home I found a 20-25 foot monstrosity -- the entire trunk, plus two huge branches sticking up into the air. It looked hideous. The brush that was there before he came was also not removed (something I didn't even mention to him). When I spoke to him on the phone, he said that they had run into metal inside the tree and couldn't get it any lower without a risk of breaking another chainsaw blade. He offered to take 150 dollars off the price, and said that leaving the tree looking like that was more aesthetically pleasing than just a stump! I found that comment to be disingenuous. I asked him how much it would cost to finish the job with another company, he said it would be no more than 300 additional dollars. When I said that I wanted to get an estimate first, he became irritated and asked if I was going to "screw [him]" out of the money, and that he had four kids to feed, etc., trying to guilt me into paying him for an unfinished job. He said that the main purpose of the job was to make sure they branches didn't fall off and hurt anyone, and that he had fulfilled that task, but I disagreed, saying that the tree's present condition was unacceptable and that I would only pay what was left of 900 after the job was completed by someone else.
Carlos called again later that night, offering to come by later that evening or the next morning with old blades, to finish the job for the full payment. I heard nothing from him the next two days until two of his workers came on Saturday morning, unannounced. They were unfriendly and visibly irritated with being there. They cut the tree down to 12 feet and said they were done. I apologized for being picky, but again explained that it was unacceptable. They finally brought the tree down a couple more feet (good enough, I guess), but then again left giant, immovable pieces of wood in my neighbor's yard as well as my own.
I called and left an admittedly nasty message on Carlos's voicemail. After some exchanges, he sent out one of his workers on a Sunday (during a Steelers game) to cut up the two huge pieces they had left. I appreciated him rectifying the situation quickly.
In the end, I think the job ended up being a much bigger pain for them than they had expected. They probably lost money on it but then tried to transfer responsibility to me. I just wanted the job to be completed as discussed, as this was a big expenditure for me. Or, maybe I'm just a jerk. They assumed that I was going to be a push-over or that I would accept a job halfway done. It looks like the other reviews for this company are pretty good, so maybe it will be fine for others as well, as long as nothing goes wrong.
"this guy spoke too soon. we encountered unforeseen problems that were rectified. this gentleman was self admittedly a bonified jerk. We worked hard at an honest price and job was completed."
"i explained to her several times the stump wasnt included in price. we always price our stumps separately so as to avoid any confusion. the contract clearly stated TREE REMOVAL with the price and no separate mention to stump grinding. if you look up at her description she even just lists TREE REMOVAL. i am very attentive to this circumstance as to avoid the misunderstanding that occurred her. Carlos/Owner"
"I gave this customer a price on tree work, he called me back over a year later after the tree had grown significantly, i honored the original price as a kind gesture. the tires did get stuck but my crew spent a significant amount of time fixing them w shovels and rakes. accidents do happen, as to the peeling away, my trucks weigh over 30000 pds and with a chipper in tow it would be impossible to peel out. this guy has a great imagination and it was my mistake workin for him without adjusting my price. please feel free to drive by his home in bethel park and attempt to visually see any of these inaccurate claims. Carlos/Owner"
"this was a great example of our fair pricing, interaction w customer and fulfilling the customers requests. As the owner, i have the ability to meet special requests and expedite the work to fit demands of other projects a homeowner might be involved in. As opposed to having a salesman come out and not have the ability to accomodate a customer the way i am able to. Carlos/Owner"
