He was reasonable and did a good job in a timely manner. He was punctual. He sent us pictures of before and after on what he did.
Service provider removed existing bath tub per our agreement
and replaced with tub of our choosing
Removed existing toilet, vanity, medicine cabinet, and vinyl floor. Did not
reinstall toilet, and we had to modify the flange ourselves.
Removed walls around shower
Replaced exhaust fan
Did not skim coat behind bathroom door
Did not feather out the walls beyond the surround
Removed associated waste from remodeling
Repaired plumbing and part of bathroom stack that he claimed was damaged
Wired GFCI, switches, and tub into the main breaker box
Replaced door and trim that he damaged, but did not replace or repair
wainscoting that also was damaged by him
Did not paint ceiling that he had modified in order to repair stack and
plumbing underneath the bathroom.
Did not move the existing exhaust fan from its location to where we had
requested it (over the bath tub)
Incorrectly installed a recessed shower/tub shelf-box unit even after
repeatedly emphasizing where we, the customer, wanted it.
Installed cement board in tub surround area, albeit incorrectly
Smoothed walls
Repeatedly disregarded the wishes of the paying customer when it suited him
*ASKED FOR PAYMENT IN CASH, AND DEMANDED $1000.00 MORE THAN HIS ESTIMATE*
Review:
WARNING, WARNING WARNING!!! DO NOT HIRE!!!
Per the estimate, Mr. Gilbert & associate arrived after some juggling of
the start date due to shipment of the bath tub we had ordered and after he had
finished a previous job with another client. The price agreed to was $3400.00
for remove/replace tub, wire tub into the main breaker, insulate and cement
board shower surround, remove & install toilet, remove & replace
vanity, replace exhaust fan, install wiring for the heated floor (with its own
breaker) and remove/prep floor (we would tile ourselves) and remove all
associated waste & trash.
We do not know where to begin our list of caveats regarding Gilbert Tile. We
feel they lured us into trusting them only to be led astray to the tune of an
extra $1000.00. We have many before, during, and after photos that we could
only hope to include in the review. It seemed that soon after the work began in
earnest, that Mr. Gilbert had en excuse for everything and only planned on
doing things his way. For example, after insulating the walls, he began
installing cement board. We asked why he wasn't installing a moisture vapor
barrier between the R-12 and cement board (should have been R-19) and his reply
was that "Everyone has their own way of doing things, this is how I do
it". Asked about it again, he outright refused. The cement board was
installed, but incorrectly at that. Nothing was plumb, there was a gap that a
standard # 2 yellow pencil easily fit into, and another gap between the wall
and the ceiling. There is a built-in lip on the Jacuzzi tub for the cement
board to be mounted flush with the tub in order to install tile against.
Because of how they installed the cement board, it extends beyond the lip of
the tub, creating a continuous space around the tub which varies in size from
1.25 inches on either the left and the right to 1.5 inches along the back wall.
We had repeatedly asked them to correct this, but their reply was to fill it
with thin set mortar.
A recessed box was to be installed but even that was done incorrectly, despite
the exact location being drawn out for him on the wall. The bathroom marble
window sill was removed and thrown away, and would not have been replaced if it
had not been noticed. He stated that he threw it out because it looked
unsightly and wouldn't match.
I could go on, and on, and on, but the worst infraction was
that Mr. Gilbert asked for cash. Not only did he want cash, he wanted an extra
$1,000.00 on top of the agreed price listed on his estimate. He said that it
was for ?extras? that he encountered during the work. I instructed him that I
wanted a detailed and itemized statement listing what would require an
additional thousand dollars. Against my better judgment, I paid what he asked,
and did NOT receive the statement, nor did I receive any type of invoice
detailing what was done. This is an unethical and unacceptable business.
